Authority Over Evil Forces
We are nearing the end of our “With Authority” series. Today we look at “Authority Over Evil Forces.” As Christians, we recognize the reality of the demonic, of evil forces, and of things that cannot be seen. There are things that “no one” (Mark 5:3,4) can grasp, let alone have authority over. Mark in particular highlights Jesus’ authority over “demons” and “unclean spirits.” What does this mean for modern day Christians?

Humble Savior, Humbled Demons
Mark 1:21-28 Why are there so many incidents of Jesus confronting Satan and his demons in the gospels? Because most people in non-Western cultures throughout the history of the world have lived in abject fear of demons! When they put their head on their mat at night, they fear that they have not done enough to appease the spirit world. Perhaps they should have made one more sacrifice, lighted one more incense stick, chanted one more protective slogan, or put on or hung up one more protective amulet or charm. They are terrorized by the daily reality of trying to appease an incredibly powerful, unseen enemy who could destroy them or their family in a whimsical instant. Could Jesus deliver them from bondage to the spirit world?

Dealing with demonic spirits
For too long the work of demons has been dismissed by many as a curious practice in heathen cultures. It has not been considered as a problem which invades lives, homes, churches, and nations. As you previously learned, demons are an organized force of powers against which believers wrestle (Ephesians 6:12). Demons are the agents through which Satan works to accomplish his purposes in the world.

Devils and Demons
Just outside the bandwidth of human sight lies a dark spirit world. Ancient civilizations have assumed its existence. Some even courted its powers. The Judeo-Christian faith is no stranger to its existence. It is led by a fallen angel once called Lucifer, now called Satan, the Hebrew word for adversary. In the New Testament accounts, he is called the Devil, diabolos, the accuser. He is the murderous enemy of mankind, the vowed foe of God and the hopeful destroyer of the church. Who is this guy? Who are the demons? How do we fight what we cannot see? Devils and Demons is a brief overview of who and what we are up against.
