we will concentrate on verses 10-13, which direct our attention to the war itself. we will then proceed to examine in more detail each of the weapons Paul mentions, and the offensive strategy of Satan which they imply. May God provided for our defense It should come as no surprise to the Christian to that we are engaged in a great spiritual battle. From the early chapters of the Old Testament it is apparent that Satan is the enemy of God, and that he actively seeks to oppose God, His purposes, and His people. the evidence for the spiritual war in the Old Testament, and New Testament. We would probably turn first to the third chapter of the Book of Genesis to find Satan striking what appears to be the first blow of the spiritual war. the battle began long before the creation of Adam and Eve. Satan’s rebellion against God is described in two Old Testament prophecies:
We all thirst. The question is, what are we quenching it with?
Have you deprived yourself of something because you refused it as sinful according to God’s word? Or have you failed a test? In a moment of weakness, did you listen to the devil? Have you allowed Sin to get the better of you in the conflict? Then take heart – all is not lost – the Word of God is still your weapon.
1. The Domain of Darkness ● Teachings about Demonic Powers → Names - Titles: Satan…; Demons…; Rulers & authorities… → Origin: angelic rebellion → Actions (what they do): Rule this world; Tempt/Cause us to sin; Oppose the gospel/our salvation; Destroy our faith & lives; & the will of God → Power: Directly connected to sin & death; Dangerous & Global; Limited, Temporary, & Defeated ● Examples of Demonic Attack/Battles tempting & waiting: Lk 4:1-13; demon-possession: Lk 22:3; Mk 5; disabling spirit (sickness): Lk 13:11; opposing the gospel: Ac 13:4; divination/fortune-telling: Ac 16:16; thru false teachers/prophets: 2Co 11:12; Rev 13:14; thorn in the flesh: 2Co 12:7; hindering fellowship: 1Th 2:18; thru anti-christs: 1Jn 2:18; 2Th 2:3; “conquering” the saints: Rev 13:7; thru idolatry, sexual immorality, love of money & slavery: Rev 17-18 2. The Kingdom of Christ ● Christ conquered Satan → because He is Lord & thru the Cross: Col 1:15ff; 2:13-15 → Has the Father transferred you into His kingdom? ● Submit to God & Resist the Devil → thru humility & prayer: Jm 4:6-10; 1Pe 5:5-11; Eph 6:18; Col 1:9 → thru a Christ-centered faith, love, and power: Col 1:4-11
1. Know that Christ is Victorious ● Our triune-God reigns (Hallelujah!): in sovereignty, Lordship, & power ● the devil is a formidable foe: but nevertheless a defeated enemy ● Christ has won the victory: over Satan, sin, and death 2. Walk in Christ’s Victory ● Abide in Christ who abides in us: (thru faith, righteousness, & love) ● Put on the full armor of God & pray: to stand against the devil’s schemes ● Proclaim the gospel of Christ’s victory & salvation: for sinners and from Satan’s power
