Sermons About Discernment
Listen and Learn: Part 3
What and who you listen to will influence what you do. Sounds like advice you might give your kids or a younger brother. But this is sound advice for kids of all ages. Let’s face it . . . your life has been defined by the voices you’ve chosen to tune in, as well as those you’ve opted to tune out. All of us wish we could go back and dial up certain voices in our lives. And if we could go back, there are voices we would tune out altogether. But, we can’t go back. What we can do, however, is begin to listen with greater discernment NOW. In this engaging, 3-part series, Buck will introduce us to the three primary voices we should tune into

Letter to the Church in Ephesus. Revelation 2:1-7
Much of our life is governed by routines; we have a pattern to the way we do things; the way we get up in the morning, go to the bathroom, eat breakfast and so on. We all have our own routines which we find helpful. The Bible too has its inbuilt patterns. In each letter, the Lord Jesus says he knows about them. The middle letter of the 7, Thyatira is the longest; numbers 2 & 5 record no faults in the churches. Each letter has a promise at the end eg 7: the right to eat from the tree of life or 11 will not be hurt by the 2nd death. These are actual churches, showing church life as we know it. Each letter addresses an issue specific in that church, as the Lord rebukes them for their shortcomings. Yes, God knows all about the church, and he will judge us for acting incorrectly. We have a daily duty to clean up our act, & keep going. We ALL have a duty to ensure that the gospel is being made clear. Leaders have that duty, and so do members as we see from Galatians We don’t go just to enjoy, to merely soak in the truth for ourselves; we go to bring our friends to hear the good news. Is it heard clearly? Is it taught well? How do we ensure that we will receive the promise of paradise? … make sure we overcome. How do we ensure we overcome? … make sure we are on Christ’s winning side, … deal with all temptation that comes our way by remaining loyal to Jesus Christ. That’s how we regain our first love. We listen to God – ears to hear... Thus our Bibles are our food store. Our confidence is in God, not in ourselves. We stand on his truth; not on ours. We base our lives on the way HE has dictated – not merely on what WE think.

The Superior Greatness of Jesus Christ (Matthew 3:11-12)
We have created a Jesus that is far to tame, a far cry from the Lord who is Creator and Judge of all men presented to us on the pages of Scripture. No wonder we and the world have so little fear of Him that we make Him into Someone far less glorious, frightening, and holy than He truly is. Jesus Christ is Lord of all and the Head of the church; He is her source and life; her hope; her single testimony. And when the fear and worship of Jesus Christ, as He is revealed in His word, is lost the church longer the “salt and light” of the world and the influence she was meant to be Matthew is now finishing his summary account of the preaching ministry of John the Baptist. And beginning in verse 11 Matthew is making the transition from John the Baptist to the Person and ministry of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. John is making the transition from his ministry to the Messiah by showing that in every way Jesus in His Person and ministry is far superior in greatness to him. This is the heart of a true servant. And the point is to make clear that Jesus Christ alone is to be the center piece of our worship.

A Prayer for the New Year
3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, [1] both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:3-11
