Divine Direction
Acts 16:1-10 One of the greatest challenges for Christians today is discerning God's will. Decisions such as whether or not to have a child, which house to buy, when to buy a new car, which career to pursue, what church to join, or who we should marry all require that we seek to discern God's will so that we may act in obedience and glorify and honor Him. How does God make His will known to us today? How does He guide and direct us in matters that concern us so that our will is in line with His? The issue of divine direction is often a source of confusion in the church today, and unfortunately, many people expect God to reveal His will to them in ways He never said He would. At the outset of Paul's second missionary journey God was laying the foundation for world-wide missions beyond Asia. We see how God guided and directed his steps and are left to consider how God guides and directs us today. The means God used to direct Paul included circumstances (vv. 1-3), counsel (vv. 4-5), direct revelation and/or circumstances (vv. 6-8), and vision (vv. 9-10). Paul's second missionary journey shows us a classic example of how the mind of man plans the way, but the Lord ultimately guides his steps (Proverbs 16:9). In today's message, Pastor Ramey teaches us a five-step process for discerning God's will for your life based on sound biblical principles: 1. Get saved and sanctified (1 Tim. 2:3-4; 1 Thes. 4:3) 2. Pray (Mt. 6:9-10; Prov. 3:5-6; Phil. 4:6-7; James 1:5) 3. Study the Bible (Ps. 40:8; 2 Tim. 2:15) 4. Seek wise counsel (Prov. 11:14; 15:22; 20:18; 24:6) And only after you have adhered to the first four steps, 5. Do what you want (Ps. 37:4; Ecc. 11:9; 1 Tim. 6:17) While we who live today aren't given direct revelation through visions or prophets to enable us to discern God's will, we have something even more sure. We have God's Word in the Bible. From the Bible, we see that God's revelation never ceases and we don't have to go outside of its sixty-six books to understand God's will!
