What is our expectation of the Messiah? Like the first disciples, do we long for the conquering king, or do we prefer Jesus who gives us our "best life now?" Do we dislike the reality of a suffering Messiah?

A Walk in the Woods
There are no shortcuts on the trail that runs between the incarnation and the resurrection, and like Jesus, neither can we take a shortcut to glory by avoiding the cross. We, too, must go down through the valley of Death before we can go up on the road to eternal life.

What kind of God do we serve? We don't often realise where our concept of God comes from or how it dictates the way we relate to Him. Then Jesus talks about taking up our cross, and dying to self. How are we to respond to that? How did Jesus respond in those situations?
