Ecclesiastes 2:1-17 - The Futility of Pleasure
We all have dreams about what we would do if we had unlimited wealth, fame, and power. As the ruler of the most powerful and wealthy nation of his day King Solomon actually got to live out this dream. He had the resources to get and do whatever he could desire and he pursued laughter, alcohol, projects, nature, leisure, real estate, music, and sex with unparalleled vigor. The shocking conclusion to his pursuits is that they all ended up being empty and meaningless. We all have our particular circumstances, goals, and objects that we think we will finally be happy and satisfied if we achieve them, but we would do well to learn from Solomon that there is no lasting joy or meaning in pleasure unless we enjoy it in relationship with God with a healthy fear of Him.
