Disciples and Priests
Similar to Paul’s analogy of the church being a body with many members and Christ being the head, Peter describes the church as a spiritual house made of living stones with Christ as the foundation-cornerstone. More specifically, he refers to believers as a holy and royal priesthood. Christ’s death on the cross eliminates the distinction between priests and laypersons. This teaching, often referred to as the priesthood of all believers, does away with the dichotomy of clergy and laity. Ministry is shared among many members—not monopolized by a few paid professionals. A believer is a follower or a disciple who is now welcomed into priesthood!

Honoring Elders (PM)
Those elders “who rule well” are to “be considered worthy of double honor”. Those who “persist in sin” are to be disciplined fairly and publicly. Due to the awesome responsibility placed on them, elders are to be chosen carefully and without haste.

Countercultural Submission
The gospel calls for Christians to both lead and follow in countercultural ways. Leaders are to lead out of a sincere desire to serve others without any motivation to serve themselves. As they do so they are to be examples to the flock of what it means to follow Jesus in the city of man. They are not to do this for any earthly reward of any sort. They are to do it because they will one day stand before the Chief Shepherd who will give them an eternal reward. Likewise, God calls Christians to submit to the leaders of the church. Peter specifically mentions young people, since they are most likely to resist submission, but his command is applicable to everyone. Both leaders and followers are to be clothed in humility before God and each other. This is easy to say but impossible to do. Leaders often lead from the wrong motivations because they feel that above all they need to protect themselves and look out for themselves. Those under their care often resist submission because they also feel they need to protect themselves and look out for themselves. But Peter tells us how we can become the people he describes. Instead of looking out for ourselves we are to "cast all our anxiety on him because he cares" for us. When we truly believe that Jesus is our Chief Shepherd we can cast all of our cares on him and obey his commands to lead in humility and submit in humility.

Soul Prosperity
We need to live in God’s righteousness, peace and joy on the inside all the time, not just cry out to God for it when we are in a crisis. Our soul is prospering when we are walking in step with Holy Spirit.

Leadership Structure
We believe that the Senior Pastor of the local church is to be the Lord Jesus Christ - see 1 Peter 5:4. We also believe that Jesus entrusted the earthly leadership of each local church to a team of Pastor - Elders. This message unpacks the biblical teaching on this topic and the application of this for Soma Church Community.

James 5:10-20
10 For examples of patience in suffering, dear brothers and sisters, look at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy. 12 But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned. The Power of Prayer 13 Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. 14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven. 16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. 17 Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! 18 Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops. Restore Wandering Believers 19 My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, 20 you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

The Local Church: Led by Elders, Served by Deacons (Part I)
The word “elder” is used over 20 times to refer to an office in the local church. In this sense, we could define elders as follows: The elders are a group of men, called by God and conformed to the Gospel in sound living and sound doctrine, who are set apart by the congregation to oversee and pastor the local church by teaching, ruling, caring for and equipping the saints, as loving and humble examples of Jesus Christ.

The Local Church: Congregationalism - Defending & Displaying the Glory of God in the Gospel of Jesus Christ
It is that way with a church? If a gaggle is nothing more than a group of geese, is a church really nothing more than a gathering of Christians? It doesn’t matter how they organize themselves. If you get enough Christians together in one place, isn’t that a church? Or, could it be that God has said something in his word about how Christians are to organize themselves as a local church?

alt.church.leadership
Paul gave Titus the directive to "appoint elders in each town." This New Testament concept of a team of elders leading a church was well known to the early church. However, 2000 years of history, language barriers, and cultural dynamics have distorted this concept for many Christians. This message wraps up the series on Titus by focusing on the concept of "appointing elders."
