Sermons About Election
We Study To Be An Example
Context is King. If we ignore context we can make the Bible say anything we want. For example, I can command you to do something most think is an "un-Christian" thing to do - all by using Scripture...“Judas went out and hanged himself; do likewise, and what you do, do quickly” (Matt27:5b; Lk3:11; Jn13:27b). All from Scripture; obviously not godly activity - context is vital. How does context impact what Paul writes in the opening chapter of 1 Thessalonians?

A New and Improved Identity
Are you satisfied with your life the way it is? Are you ready for a new and improved life in Christ? This week we start a new series called "New and Improved" going through the book of Ephesians. We have a new identity in Christ that shapes how we should live. Mike shares how God has chosen and adopted us, how Jesus has redeemed and forgiven us, and how the Holy Spirit has sealed and secured us.

Sovereignty and election
Is someone being a Christian ultimately attributable to their location, chance events in their life (think the film Sliding Doors) or because God chose them? And if he chose them to be, on what basis did He do it? Was it on the basis of foreseen good works, or even foreseen faith – does God pick those who are going to pick him?! No. A person trusts in Jesus because God chose them by grace (completely unmerited favour from the Lord) alone, but why? And doesn’t this mean they will live a deliberately sinful life knowing that they are chosen and therefore will be saved? And doesn’t this make the person proud if they believe they have been chosen and others haven't? And doesn’t it make evangelism pointless – since some are chosen anyway? Is it fair? Is it good news? Note: this sermon was followed by a time of Q&A.

God's Glory in Salvation (John 17, Bob Brainard)
God's manifold glory in the salvation of men is no more clearly set forth than in the Lord's High Priestly prayer, found in John 17. The sovereignty of God, the knowledge of Christ, the eternal glory that is Christ's and that believers will forever behold as the redeemed in the presence of their Redeemer are all realities that await us who know Him. And all this, "To the praise of the glory of His grace."

The Called Ones of Jesus Christ (Romans 1:6)
What does it mean that Christians are called "the called"? In Romans 1:6 Paul means here that the "Effective calling is an act of God the Father, speaking through the human proclamation of the gospel, in which he summons people to himself in such a way that they respond in saving faith." Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology (Grand Rapids, Mich.: Zondervan, 1994) 693.

CHOSEN, Part 2: Why Election?
We have a free will, but only inside of our own nature. We will never choose God on our own, this is why election is necessary. God, in His infinite grace, chooses us according to His sovereign good pleasure!
