LIVING BY FAITH: for the Lord and thru Overwhelming Trials (1 Kings 17:1-24) 05-10-09
INTRODUCTION: Today’s Topic: Faith. Today’s Passage in Context (adapted from the ESV Study Bible): --> Some Themes found in 1 Kings [the LORD “Yahweh” is the only true God, the only One worthy to be worshipped, Who judges those who worship false gods, and Who is also just, gracious, and faithful to His promises]; --> Some Highlights of 1 Kings 17-22 [God is working miracles thru the prophet Elijah (including a drought, supernatural provisions for daily life, raising the dead, and answering by fire) to show all Israel that the false gods of Baal (and all other false gods) are not true gods. Only the LORD, the God of Israel, is God, He alone has power over life & death, and He will judge the house of the evil King Ahab for his wickedness (yet God is still merciful and deals graciously with Ahab after he humbles himself)]. LIVING BY FAITH FOR THE LORD: --> Thru Revelation: with a God-Centered Perspective & Purpose (v1); --> Thru Obedience: to God’s Word & His Call on Our Lives (vs2-5, 10); --> Thru Trust: in God’s Provisions (of Supernatural & Ordinary means) (vs6-10). LIVING BY FAITH THRU OVERWHELMING TRIALS: --> When all Hope is Gone (vs8-12); In Spite of our Fears (v13); --> By Giving our All to Jesus vs13-15; --> By Experiencing God thru Obedience (vs15-16); --> By Persevering unto Maturity (vs17-24).

Running From God
Running From God Elijah in 1 Kings 19: 1-21 witnessed the power of God in the 18th chapter when 450 prophets of Baal offered sacrifices’ to Baal on Mount Carmel and nothing happened. Elijah had them pour water and more water over the offerings and wood and the power of God consumed everything, the wood, sacrifices and the stones. After seeing all these things, when his live was threatened, he ran and did from persecution and God. How often do we do the same thing?

Prepare for the King, pt. 1 (Matthew 3:1-4)
All four gospels record the ministry of John the Baptist from their own unique perspective according to their purpose. Luke, alone, includes the narrative of his birth. But all three synoptics (Matthew, Mark, Luke) all include this initial phase of John’s ministry in the wilderness. The apostle John, written much later, covers this same period, but emphasizes the Baptist’s role as witness to the Messiah and alone announces Him as “The Lamb that takes away the sin of the world.†Luke is written to present an accurate historical account, so he fills in many of the details left out by Matthew and in this sense is more helpful from a historical point of view. However, Luke and Matthew’s purposes are different. Matthew’s goal is to present Jesus Christ as King, the King the prophets looked forward to and the people should have been expecting. Matthew is, in this sense, more interested in the message than the details. Thus, with little introduction John the Baptist explodes onto the scene of Matthew’s gospel, in order to accentuate, with all its force, the message by which the way for the King would be prepared: “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.â€
