Elizabeth Remembers John
Elizabeth remembers what it was like to be the mother of John. The Kingdom of God is always active, even when we are waiting. The promise is always there. It is the promise that allows us to wait, that helps us to bear the waiting. It is the seed of the promise received that starts to grow. We can only really wait if what we are waiting for has already begun in us.

The Magnificat
In the Second Sunday of Advent 2008, Pastor JR Vassar teaches from Mary's Magnificat (Luke 1:45-55). In this passage, Elizabeth blesses Mary, and Mary breaks out in a song of praise and thanks to God for his work for her and in her. It is a political and prophetic song with huge claims about Jesus and implications for our lives.

Celebrating God's Goodness
After Hannah is blessed with the birth of Samuel, she dedicates him and then offers a prayer of thanksgiving to God. She rejoices over his deliverance, rests in his control, trusts in his knowledge of her situation, and hopes in God’s plan. We are encouraged to do all those things as well, but the focus of the passage is the “anointed one,†Jesus Christ.

Overflowing Joy
Having accepted the call of God on her life in bearing God's son Jesus, Mary hurries to her cousin Elizabeth's house--a difficult 80-mile journey, perhaps a journey made alone. In her determination, she wrestles with the idea of society's opinion of her as an unwed mother, even though she knows the truth of the conception. Upon her arrival at Elizabeth's house, joy overflows between these two women and Mary finds refuge there for three months. Can we experience this overflowing joy in our lives today? After a time of deep struggling and questioning, God often brings an exuberant, transforming joy to us that boils over to those we encounter.
