The Test of Evidence
How do we know we have eternal life? That’s the BIG question in 1 John. This is how we know, 5:2 is a key phrase; that you may know, 5:13. We know, we know, we know, John keeps saying to his readers. He’s given us a number of tests to check ourselves: the test of obedience, of truth, of love. And now EVIDENCE. The past two centuries have seen rational evidence exalted above all other ideas. “Unless you can prove it to me, I won’t believe”. A few years ago, scientific proof was the ultimate form of proof. But now we recognise that such proof is not what we use in the law-court, nor in discovering historical truth. In those cases we want cumulative evidence, which when pieced together is “beyond reasonable doubt”. The same is true of faith; is there sufficient evidence to believe? And what sort of evidence should we put forward – would our personal experience count? Would the authority of the church be acceptable? Is it a matter of human reasoning? We’ll look at evidence this evening

Blessings Through Obedience
Healing belongs to us today. God has provided it for us in several ways. Under the Old Covenant, He promised to take sickness away from us if we would obey His commandments, which under the New Covenant is the commandment of love. If we walk in love, we should walk in divine healing. We are to be rooted and grounded in love, it is to be what stabilizes and gives us strength. Love is the way to inheriting the eternal, God kind of life that starts when we are saved.

People, meet your stereotype before it meets you
The Lectionary texts for today speak about thirst for life. The people thirst for water in the wilderness. The Samaritan woman at the well meets the One who gives the water of eternal life. Paul speaks of God’s love being “poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” The Samaritan woman didn’t recognize her need for “Living Water”, instead we find a woman who is secluded to an island in her own life. Simon and Garfunkel in their song entitled “I am a Rock” express this idea well: “A fortress deep and mighty, that none may penetrate. I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain. It’s laughter and its loving that I disdain. I am a rock, I am an island...I have my books and my poetry to protect me; I am shielded in my armor, hiding in my room, safe within my womb. I touch no one and no one touches me. I am a rock, I am an island. And a rock feels no pain; and an island never cries.”

All I Want for Christmas is Eternal lIfe
11 year old Gayla Peevey in 1953 sang all she wanted for Christmas was a Hippopotamus. The lyrics went like this: "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas, Only a hippopotamus will do; Don't want a doll, no dinky Tinker Toy, I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy. I can see me now on Christmas morning, creeping down the stairs; Oh what joy and what surprise when I open up my eyes; To see a hippo hero standing there." All of us are longing for eternal life. This is why our tendency as fallen human beings is to look for life in all the wrong places. Such places include our careers, our children, material possessions, sexuality, luxury, technology, entertainment. If this is the case with us, we might as well be looking to get life and joy from a hippopotamus. Here in our text the apostle John points us to the right place. He says: the Life appeared. We have seen it. We proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and has appeared to us. Only Jesus can give us the life and joy all of us are seeking.

The Bread of Life (John 6:22-71)
Jesus says he can provide a bread that will sustain us, giving life to the world and giving us eternal life. But he draws a strong reaction from the crowd when he explains that it is his own body that is this bread. We see that Jesus is speaking of believing in him; to believe in Jesus is to eat this bread. But we see as well that eternal life comes at the cost of our own desires; we must give ourselves to Jesus.

Reversing Spiritual Entropy
Following Mary's example of worship, Christ teaches on the paradox of giving life through His death...an example that still holds true today. For a seed to produce fruit, the seed has to die. The eternal life possessed by someone who follows Christ began with the death of Christ. Equally, the beginning of our conformation to the image of Christ, begins with the death of our will

Unless You Repent
The Lord Jesus spoke about the importance of repentance in today's scripture. In fact, He says it is necessary for every person to repent in order to have eternal life. Since repentance is such a key Christian concept, what do we need to understand about repentance?

Jesus; the Life of the World
Do you know the significance of the Christmas tree? Many believe that the evergreen tree represent the most everlasting aspect of the first Christmas in Bethlehem – the eternal life in Jesus Christ. Of course, the Christmas tree, once cut, won’t last forever, but the picture it provides is essential – life in heaven forever.
