Essentials Part 1

There is a battle for truth and much is at stake – God’s glory and the eternal destiny for all. Join us as we are encouraged by Jude (vv. 3-25) today to contend earnestly for the faith. We will also speak to the essentials of the church. These are the things that we will have a close hand on as we have an open hand to the culture around us.

Jesus and the Afterlife
One of the most important questions we all must answer is what happens to us when we die. In tonight's passage, Jesus is asked this perennially important question by the Sadducees, a group of religious leaders who think the idea of life after death is absurd. Jesus responds with insight and authority, proving the Sadducees wrong and pointing us all to the hope of the resurrection found only in Jesus himself.

Rich Man, Poor Man: Who's Who?
Does it really matter how we live? Can we afford not to live beyond ourselves? not be wise and generous stewards of our stuff? not live in complete dependence upon God? In His longest and most complex parable, Jesus declares that the way we live now is a good indication of where we'll spend eternity. We'd better get it right!

A Cause Worth Living For
Writing about climate change, Al Gore says: “The climate crisis also offers us the chance to experience what very few generations in history have had the privilege of knowing: a generational mission; the exhilarations of a compelling moral purpose; a shared and unifying cause; the thrill of being forced by circumstances to put aside the pettiness and conflict that so often stifle the restless human need for transcendence; the opportunity to rise...When we rise, we will experience and epiphany as we discover that this crisis is not really about politics at all. It is a moral and spiritual challenge.” Lofty words....inspirational....visionary... Question: Should we not be even MORE passionate about matters that will impact eternity? Do we have a compelling moral purpose, cause, or generational mission that we will give our all to fulfill? Key Passage: 2 Timothy 2:3-4

On Entering the Kingdom of God (Mark 10:13-52)
Continuing our series in Mark, we see where we stand relative to the overall flow of the book. In this passage from Mark 10, we see stated and demonstrated four things that are required of us as Christians: the humility of a child; a practice of discipleship that is willing to relinquish our own rights and possessions for God's sake; a cherishing of service toward others that is willing to endure suffering and sacrifice; and a faith that approaches Christ in complete dependence and trust in him.

Life on the Other Side
No one enjoys thinking about the reality of hell, yet Jesus actually had more to say about hell than He did about heaven. In today's spiritual climate, the doctrine of eternal punishment has come under heavy scrutiny and debate. Many people, including some prominent evangelical scholars, have moved away from a traditional interpretation of the enternal torment in hell, to either a teaching of universal salvation or a view of judgement that results in the annihilation of the sinner, rather than an eternal, conscious punishment. Some feel that the subject is so far beyond our understanding and that it should be left alone in the hands of God, but one's belief in regard to judgement, punishment, and the justice of God will dramatically affect how we live, and how we reach out in love to others. Today's topic may raise more questions and debate in your mind than we are able to answer in our short time together, but if it motivates you to study the scriptures for yourself - great! Key Passage: John 5:16-30

Matthew 24:45 - In That Place There Will Be Weeping and Gnashing of Teeth
If you don’t know Christ, realize that you have offended and sinned against an infinitely worthy and holy God. Confess your sins, repent of them and believe on Him. Your opportunity to repent ends at death. Do not delay, for you are hanging by a slender thread.

Haggai 2:1-23 - Eyes on Eternity
The Israelites began to rebuild the temple but the work was being threatened by the discouragement of the new, seemingly inferior form of the temple. God sends Haggai to tell the people that the form of the temple doesn't matter compared to the future glory that will come. We, like the Israelites, should not be looking backwards to the way things used to be or on what is temporary but instead be looking ahead to eternity where we will get to see God in His glory and where all of His promises to us as His people will be perfectly fulfilled.

John 14:1-7 - The Hope of Going Home
We all want to be in a place of eternal rest, but Jesus is the only way that God has created for us to go there. Jesus is back at the Father's side preparing a place for those who trust in Him and He will come back someday to take us there. Having our eyes fixed on our eternal home with our God and King will help us to persevere through the sufferings must go through here and now.
