Slavery or Freedom?
Here we are in what used to be “The Land of the Free and the home of the Brave.” We used to be brave. And when I was growing up, this used to be a free country. It isn’t any more. Freedom is decreasing. And the momentum for its demise is increasing. Inexorably increasing, with seeming inevitability.

Galatians 1.1-5: The Gospel of Grace and Peace
Paul tells us in Galatians 5.1, It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery As Paul writes to the Galatians there is something important at stake. It is freedom. True freedom was being attacked in his day and it is being attacked in our day as well. We must lift up Jesus, who is the freedom giver. The cross of Christ is the only way one can experience true freedom and the Spirit of Christ is the only way one can live out God's aim and mission. Over the next few months we will look at God's desire of freedom through the book of Galatians. We will see what God has done to make freedom possible, we will see the message of freedom and see how one who is truly free lives. Our prayer is that nothing would hold you back from living out God's aim and mission. Our prayer is that you would be free and therefore live a life of freedom.

Walking with Grace (Psalm 103)
Life is filled with all sorts of landscape. An all terrain faith is equally balanced for the breathtaking view from the mountaintop and the confusing trek though a cold, dark valley. It provides adequate support for walking in rough, rocky stretches and stability for the slippery spots. In this exploration of the Psalms, we will see that no matter where you find yourself in life there is an appropriate faith response to your life situation. Are you ready for the hike?

A Diamond on Black Velvet: The Gospel and its setting
I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith. Romans 1.16,17 Often the first three chapters of Romans are broken down into such small bits that we lose the whole message of this incredible text. Today in the Word we will be looking at this remarkable and very convicting explanation of the gospel as we continue our study of the New Testament book of Romans. We encourage you to read and re-read this book during the summer months.

Most of All, Believe THIS!
Of all the things that we should believe about God and God's Word, we must make sure that we believe that God loves us, because God's love is the answer to our fundamental flaw.

1 Corinthians 5
In 1 Corinthians 5 Paul criticizes the Corinthians for not protecting the community from sin and using their "freedom in Christ" as an excuse to tolerate sin amongst those who claim to be followers of Christ. He then clarifies that it is not our job to condemn those who do not claim to be followers of Christ, but it is our job to love each other enough to hold each other accountable when our actions don't line up with our words. Sometimes the most loving thing to do (as a last resort) is to help someone face up to the destructiveness of sin by asking them to leave the community.

The Cost of Freedom
The cost of freedom is blood. Once a year we observe Memorial Day to honor those who shed their blood and died for our freedoms. For the Christian, every day is a Memorial Day because of the sacrifice of Jesus. Our freedom should cause us to mourn the loss and celebrate the significance of the life once lived. We enjoy freedom in America because people have died for our country. Our freedom as citizens and as Christians is the result of a love-based sacrifice.

The Grace of Freedom
This year we are preaching through the Revised Common Lectionary. It has a series of readings for every day and Sunday of the year from the Psalms, the Gospels, the Epistles, and the Old Testament narratives or prophets. During the Summer months it includes a series of readings that take us right through Romans. So we will be following the Romans readings in our services and preaching as well. Some, with good reason, have called Romans “the freedom letter.” No other book in the Bible unfolds the gospel like Romans does. But be warned. You cannot seriously read Romans without being changed. It is a dangerous book. Today in the Word, we will begin that series with Romans 1.1-5.

Choosing True Freedom
What does it mean to be free? True freedom is a choice ... it does not come from following a list of rules, but instead comes from walking by the Spirit. In this message, Mike shares how we learn to walk by the Spirit, so that we can experience true freedom in our lives and break free from the many things that hold us back from following Christ.

An Authentic Community
These days, there is an appetite for spirituality and a huge distaste for "church." Is this really what God wanted? The church was intended to be a dynamic, life-giving movement of people who experience and extend the love of God together. In fact, Jesus said that you can't be spiritual on your own, that the spiritual life is something we do together. If you catch a glimpse of God's dream for doing life together, we are convinced you'll never want anything less.

The Purpose of Suffering
It is Gods will to shape us into the image of His son, Jesus Christ. But, how does he accomplish this? James tells us that it begins with the testing of our faith, leads us towards patience, and ultimately brings us to maturity. There are many reasons that we resist such tests and trials, but the bottom line is this: trials are the very things God uses to mold us into the image of Christ—and there is no shortcut. Key Verses: Rom 8:28-29, Php 2:1-8, James 1:2-4, Php 4:11-13, 2Cor 11:23ff, 2Tim 4:6-8

Losing My Religion - Finding Freedom
The philosophical challenge to our contemporary faith is similar to that facing the young church in Colosse, namely that we are naive to think we can limit a connectedness to God to faith in Jesus. Paul explains that the cross was a demonstration of a deep forgiveness rather than superficial indifference to our moral failings. Consequently, faith in Jesus frees us from the uncertainty of getting religion right, and invites us into the dynamic relationship with God.

A Prison of Our Own Making
Anger is our body's God given response to perceived threats. God placed it there to alert us to a potential problem and to give us the energy to deal with that problem. The problem is that we sometimes vent our anger on innocent bystanders, or internalize it so that it consumes our thoughts. When this happens, we are in a prison of our own making. There is a way to freedom. Key Passages: Matt 18:15ff, Matt 18:21ff, Eph 4:26

Freedom on the Narrow Road
Throughout the ages the church has had a bad habit of adding rules to God’s good commands in Scripture in an effort to try earn God’s acceptance by good works and to prevent people from sinning. The Apostle Paul had to confront the Galatians because they were trying to add old Jewish rituals like circumcision and particular feasts and festivals to the requirements for being right with God. Paul exhorted the Galatians, and you and I in turn, to fight for the freedom that God bought for us by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die for us and to not submit to the slavery that comes from living by rules. He then reminded the Galatians and us not to use our blood-bought freedom to be selfish and sinful but instead to love each other.

Slavery off of the Narrow Road
Some of the people in the church at Galatia were leaving behind the gospel of grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone and were turning back to the idea that they could put themselves right with God through obeying certain rules and rituals. Paul confronts them and reminds them that going back to rule-keeping puts us back into slavery to the rules. We all end up as slave to that which we think we need for our acceptance or our happiness, whether we look to gratify our own selfish impulses that always cry out for more or the expectations of other people. Instead of such slavery God has extended to us acceptance and adoption into the family, and since this was bought by Jesus Himself on the cross, we are no longer indebted but are free people who live in His grace.

A Radical Freedom
In Chapter 5 the Apostle Paul comes to the obvious conclusion of the arguments he has been presenting up to this point. That conclusion is that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. In chapter 5 Paul reveals that we are to stand firm in our faith in the grace of Christ and not to put on again the yoke of slavery to works of the law. In fact he tells the Galatians that if they receive circumcision they are severed from Christ!

Paul introduces himself to the Roman church and helps to address some Jew and Gentile issues. But the primary theme of Romans is the gospel, which Paul lays out clearly and forcefully, explaining how it is that all of us as sinners deserving of God's wrath can
