Sermons About Freedom
Choosing True Freedom
What does it mean to be free? True freedom is a choice ... it does not come from following a list of rules, but instead comes from walking by the Spirit. In this message, Mike shares how we learn to walk by the Spirit, so that we can experience true freedom in our lives and break free from the many things that hold us back from following Christ.

An Authentic Community
These days, there is an appetite for spirituality and a huge distaste for "church." Is this really what God wanted? The church was intended to be a dynamic, life-giving movement of people who experience and extend the love of God together. In fact, Jesus said that you can't be spiritual on your own, that the spiritual life is something we do together. If you catch a glimpse of God's dream for doing life together, we are convinced you'll never want anything less.

The Purpose of Suffering
It is Gods will to shape us into the image of His son, Jesus Christ. But, how does he accomplish this? James tells us that it begins with the testing of our faith, leads us towards patience, and ultimately brings us to maturity. There are many reasons that we resist such tests and trials, but the bottom line is this: trials are the very things God uses to mold us into the image of Christ—and there is no shortcut. Key Verses: Rom 8:28-29, Php 2:1-8, James 1:2-4, Php 4:11-13, 2Cor 11:23ff, 2Tim 4:6-8

That Lying Devil
There are many people enslaved by urges, habits, and sins that they seem powerless to overcome. Many have in fact given up. The good news is that there is hope for even the most seriously bound, but we must learn to recognize the enemy’s tactics. Too often we do not begin to fight until the battle is over. Losing My Religion - Finding Freedom
The philosophical challenge to our contemporary faith is similar to that facing the young church in Colosse, namely that we are naive to think we can limit a connectedness to God to faith in Jesus. Paul explains that the cross was a demonstration of a deep forgiveness rather than superficial indifference to our moral failings. Consequently, faith in Jesus frees us from the uncertainty of getting religion right, and invites us into the dynamic relationship with God.

Collateral Damage
We like to think that we have the freedom to do as we please, as long as we're not hurting other people. What we often don't realize is that by living for ourselves we are inevitably hurting other people. Listen in as we look at the book of Judges and see how we often unknowingly do harm to others.

A Prison of Our Own Making
Anger is our body's God given response to perceived threats. God placed it there to alert us to a potential problem and to give us the energy to deal with that problem. The problem is that we sometimes vent our anger on innocent bystanders, or internalize it so that it consumes our thoughts. When this happens, we are in a prison of our own making. There is a way to freedom. Key Passages: Matt 18:15ff, Matt 18:21ff, Eph 4:26

Freedom on the Narrow Road
Throughout the ages the church has had a bad habit of adding rules to God’s good commands in Scripture in an effort to try earn God’s acceptance by good works and to prevent people from sinning. The Apostle Paul had to confront the Galatians because they were trying to add old Jewish rituals like circumcision and particular feasts and festivals to the requirements for being right with God. Paul exhorted the Galatians, and you and I in turn, to fight for the freedom that God bought for us by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die for us and to not submit to the slavery that comes from living by rules. He then reminded the Galatians and us not to use our blood-bought freedom to be selfish and sinful but instead to love each other.

Slavery off of the Narrow Road
Some of the people in the church at Galatia were leaving behind the gospel of grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone and were turning back to the idea that they could put themselves right with God through obeying certain rules and rituals. Paul confronts them and reminds them that going back to rule-keeping puts us back into slavery to the rules. We all end up as slave to that which we think we need for our acceptance or our happiness, whether we look to gratify our own selfish impulses that always cry out for more or the expectations of other people. Instead of such slavery God has extended to us acceptance and adoption into the family, and since this was bought by Jesus Himself on the cross, we are no longer indebted but are free people who live in His grace.

A Radical Freedom
In Chapter 5 the Apostle Paul comes to the obvious conclusion of the arguments he has been presenting up to this point. That conclusion is that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. In chapter 5 Paul reveals that we are to stand firm in our faith in the grace of Christ and not to put on again the yoke of slavery to works of the law. In fact he tells the Galatians that if they receive circumcision they are severed from Christ!

Introduction to Romans
Paul introduces himself to the Roman church and helps to address some Jew and Gentile issues. No Guilt
If we’re in sin & not in Christ, we're imprisoned & held captive by our guilt, just as sure as if were in jail. But forgiveness in Christ frees us. When we're in Christ, we should never again be enslaved by sin & guilt. Guilt has its place and its function. But if we are in Christ Jesus, then our sins are forgiven and we are free from guilt ruining our lives.

No Fear
If we correctly understand our situation, Christians should be largely free of the common fear that no matter how good we are, how hard we try, we’re never going to be quite “good enough,” as far as God is concerned. Have I Blown It?
God could have created us preprogrammed to do his will only. However, this is not what he did. Instead he created us free—free to love, free to hate, free to rebel. This has made the world a very complex place filled with bad choices. However, God is not surprised by our bad choices. Instead, he is lovingly waiting for us to turn to him for help. Key Verses: Luke 15:11, Ro 11:32, Eph 1:18, 1John 3:2-3

High Definition Living
High Definition Living? The tension of Holiness and Freedom 1 Corinthians 8 An opinion is a position you hold, with varying degrees of intensity that is merely voicing a preference you may have. A conviction it hat which is roted in your conscience. “ Ravi Zacharias It is not unusual that we regard our opinions with a greater degree of intensity than we do our conscience. Consequently, we may be careful what we believe, yet are noticeably more casual in how we live. 1. Enduring the scrutiny ● The very discussion of personal holiness implies personal scrutiny. ● 1 Peter 1:17 ● 1 Corinthians 3:1-17 Rick Joyner – “Walking in the light is more than knowing and obeying certain truths. It is being true and being free from the compulsion to hide.” 2. The relief that freedom brings. ● The basic ingredient of freedom in Christ is our call, and desire to love as we were created to love. ● Romans 13:8, Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another ● Luke 15, The Prodigal, ‘When he was yet a long way off…” ● We are free now to love and pursue God and others. No longer driven to serve ourselves. 3. The problem of weakness in ourselves and others. ● 1 Corinthians 8 ● Understanding the difference between disagreeing with someone who thinks and believes differently from you vs. offending a weaker Christian. ● It is also important that we recognize our weak areas and guard ourselves. The pursuit of Holiness is ultimately a pursuit of God, not issues or situations

The Good News Really Is GOOD NEWS!
Our culture has tried to make the good news into bad news. In John 16:8, Jesus says the Holy Spirit will convict the world of guilt or sin. If that's the case, then what is our job? Our job as a church and followers of Christ is to be witnesses and tell people the good news of what He has done and show how He has set us free. Our job is not to tell the world that they're wrong, but that Jesus is right, and how living in the rightness of Jesus is far more fulfilling. We have a new beginning because of what Jesus has done for us, and we get to grow up in this grace.
