What Went Wrong With This World?
Journey of Beginnings What Went Wrong With This World? Genesis 6-8 Three world conditions that caused God to say, I’ve had enough!” 1. Every intent of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil all the time. (verse 5) 2. The earth was full of violence. (verse 11) 3. All the people on earth had corrupted their ways. (verse 12) Noah, a real person of faith steps up to the plate! (chapter 7&8) 1. He took action on the message he received from God. 2. His faith compelled him to complete a most difficult task. 3. Through his faith he and his immediate family were saved. The coming of Jesus will be like the days of Noah. (Matthew 24:37,38; Luke 17:26,27) 1, People will be eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, buying and selling, planting and building. 2. The vast population did not wake up to realize what was happening until the flood came and destroyed them all. God makes a covenant that effects you. 1. Never again will I send a flood that destroys everything (verse 8: 21,22; 9:13) 2. Step out of the Ark into the new life God offers you!

The First: Deception-Sin-Consequences
Journey of Beginnings The First: Deception-Sin-Consequences Scripture: Genesis chapter 3 Three cunning tactics of Satan exposed: 1. He tries to instill doubt and unbelief in what God says. (verse 1a) 2. He tries to create confusion with what God says . (verse 1b) 3. He tries to imply that she is being deprived by God. (verse 4) The “set up” for deception and what to watch out for: 1. Overstating the restriction; feeling slighted (verse 2a) 2. Understating the consequences; not connecting the dots (verse 2b) 3. The fruit looked good, pleasant, and desirable - the addictive three (verse 6) The big unanswered question: Where is Adam, the dear husband and fearless leader? (verse 6) 1. Eve was being deceived. (1 Timothy 2:14 2. Adam walked into disobedience knowing better. (1Timothy 2:14) Two destructive ways in responding to guilt: 1. To hide and try a false cover for our shame. (verse 7,10,11) 2. To blame someone or something. (verse 12,13) The consequences of sin: 1. Serpent- you are cursed above all, crawl on your belly and eat dust all your life. There will be enmity between you and the woman. Her offspring will crush your head. (verse 14,15) 2. Woman-Your pain in childbearing will be severe. There will be tension as to who is in charge, but he (your husband) will rule over you. (verse 16) 3. Adam-cursed is the ground, it will produce thorns and thistles and you will work hard all your life. (verse 17-19) LORD God-“Adam and Eve, where are you?” 1. Jesus made cloths for them from an animal sacrifice (verse 22) 2. As an act of mercy He protected them from eating of the tree of life and living forever in their sin. (verse 22-24) 3. The very first promise of the coming Savior. (Gen. 3:15)

In The Beginning God...
Journey of Beginnings In The Beginning God... Scripture: Genesis 1:1-3 Christian World View The Bible is not a science book, however when it makes a statement related to science; it is the truth because God is both the author of science and the Bible. Natural Revelation 1-6 Special Revelation 7-11 Experiential Revelation 12-14 Derived Truth Revealed Truth Experienced Truth 1. Hypothesis The Bible is perfect, Meditation, contemplation, 2. Theory Refreshing, Trustworthy worship 3. Law Genesis 1 Two views of the Genesis creation: 1. The mature earth view 2. An earth before Adam and Eve that was overthrown by Lucifer’s revolt DOES GOD CREATE AND EMPTY FORMLESS EARTH (Isaiah 45:18) According to Isaiah God did not create the earth empty and formless. HOW DID THE EARTH GET LIKE THIS? (Isaiah 14:12ff; Jer. 4:23-27; 2 Peter 3:6-7 Lucifer because of pride and rebellion was cast out of heaven. 1. I will ascend into heaven. 2. I will set my throne above the stars. 3. I will sit upon the mount of the congregation in the sides of the north. 4. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. 5. I will make myself like the Most High. Is this the man that shook the earth and made kingdoms to tremble, and opened not the graves of its prisoners? Two Key Words: 1. Created (bara) to call into existence that which did not exist before 2. Made (asah) to form or fashion something out of material already existing. What does it mean to be created in God’s Image and Likeness (Verse 26)

Different Strokes for Different Folks
Sometimes people look at the situation of life that they find themselves in and see how it differs from someone else. Almost inevitably the response is to compare our lives with someone else. Interestingly, we rarely complain that our lives are not like the less fortunate. Few people say, “God, why could you not have made me a poor homeless person with cancer?” More often people say, “God, why could not you have give me a better paying job and fix my health problems?” This in itself is a commentary on the way that we view the gifts of God to us. Today, in the continuing story of Joseph, we see once again that God’s plan for people is different. In his sovereign rule over this world, he does not deal with everyone the same way. The challenge for us is to be content with what God is doing in our lives, knowing that he is bringing about his ultimate purpose, and recognizing that we must live in humble obedience to him.

Going Strange Places
One of the enduring and encouraging truths in Scripture is that God never leaves us alone. He is always with his children, even though his plan for life may take us through some strange places. Today, in the life of Joseph, we see God taking Jacob to a strange place—Egypt. It is strange because it is taking him away from that land that God had promised him, and it is strange because it is a place that both his father had been told not to go to Egypt. But today we are reminded that God is working out his plan through the mess we call life, even when it takes us to some strange places. And when we are confident that God is working out his plan in our lives, we can live in strange places and wait to see the abundant provision of God.

The Test of Change
Change is hard. In fact, it is so hard that most people never change, at least for the better. They simply do not want to do the hard work necessary to bring about lasting change. Yet we must understand that God’s purpose for our lives is change. He desires biblical change that comes from bringing our lives into subjection to the lordship of Christ in every area. But God is not interested in just any kind of change. He wants to take us from being self-centered people who live for their own satisfaction to the God-centered people who live for the glory of God. And that change will not come easy. It will be the result of many great works of God’s grace in your life that will bring difficulty and testing. Those tests that come from various people and places will be the opportunity to evaluate the change in your life. Only through testing can you see what has really taken place. Is the change just external, something that is easy to show in times of ease? Or will the change hold up under the stress of life?

We all give someone - or something - authority over our lives. The Israelites begged God for an earthly King, dissatisfied with Him as their Heavenly King. In this message we look at why we often turn to outside influences to meet our needs instead of God.

Face to Face with Ugliness
There are some things that are simply too hideous to look at, while at the same time they are too gripping to turn away from. To come face to face with something so horrible can be life-changing. It can soften us and melt us, or it can harden us. Yet the greatness problem is not what is going on around us. It is what is going on inside of us. The ugliness of sin has created a hideous monster—self. We have learned to live with it only by ignoring it. Yet through God’s grace in our lives, he brings about circumstances that reveal to us just how bad we really are. When we come face to face with ourselves, we have come face to face with a monster that is far more gruesome than any fictional character could ever be. Yet that face to face encounter with our inner man is often the tool that God uses to wake us up. Today, in the story of Joseph, we see the awakening of a conscience as his brothers come face to face with their own hideous actions. We are reminded that only God’s grace can awaken our conscience and only that same grace can deal with our conscience and cause us to find grace and hope in Jesus.

Genesis: 25 The Beginning of Hope in the Promises of God: A Life of Abraham
Why does God chose whom he choses? In this passage we see three incidents where God seems to choose one group/person over another. The answer may be as simple as the gospel is more about God and His glory than it is for our own glory. God blessed Isaac, because He had chose this line of Abraham to be the line that would one day produce the Messiah. God continually appears as the sovereign one here, which leads us back to the question why again? Romans 9 attempts to answer this question, but I would also say that the story we have unfolded in these past 12 chapters also helps us understand, why.

The Road to the Top
Everyone is interested in success. They want to reach "the top," whatever that is in their mind. However, defining success God's way is the only way to please him, and it is the only thing that will enable us to endure difficult circumstances. Success must be defined as being what God wants us to be where he wants us to be it. Joseph shows us what it means to accept God's plan and live life in difficult times with a desire to please God.

Genesis: 24 The Beginning of Hope in the Promises of God: A Life of Abraham
We do not “Control” God in any way. This is true in healing, miracles, etc. These are done for God’s will, in His timing. Are we trusting God for key issues in our life? Do we consult God when it comes to decisions such as whom we are going to spend our lives with? What are you struggling with in regards to God’s will, and your life? Are we trusting that God loves us, and is acting on our behalf on a regular basis? Are we giving God gratitude for what He does regularly in your lives?

The Ups and Downs of Life
In the ups and downs of life, we have no idea how deep the downs will go, how long they will last, and how steep the ride up will be. Often, we feel so overwhelmed by the downs that it threatens our faith in God and causes us to wonder if he is really in control. It is during the down times that God is usually doing his best work in our lives. All of us find it easy to live when things are going well. But God brings the down times so that we can learn to experience his grace. From the life of Joseph, we can learn how he handled the down times so that we can learn how we should handle them.

Genesis: 23 The Beginning of Hope in the Promises of God: A Life of Abraham
Death is ultimate and inevitable we cannot put our hope in temporal healings and desire to keep ourselves alive. Death reminds us of our mortality, and brings us into a sobering reality that our life, as we are living it, will cease someday. Death is not natural, and is the very thing that Christ conquers in His death and subsequent resurrection from the dead.

Genesis: 21 The Beginning of Hope in the Promises of God: A Life of Abraham
What is joy, what is blessing? Our church culture today spends much of its time fabricating joy, and chasing blessings that are fabricated, temporal and ultimately meaningless. There is one popular TV preacher (Identity withheld) that wrote, “God is a partner who exists primarily to make sure we’re happy.” It isn’t just a false gospel that can write this stuff, it is ultimately a joy robbing statement. If God exists for us, we can pity this world, because there is nothing greater than the things we can fabricate. There is nothing, or no one to worship, but ourselves, which is ultimately what aberrant theology does; move our eyes from Him, to ourselves!

Bouncing Back From A Crisis
The life of Joseph, found in Genesis, supplies us with a biblical example of how to bounce back from a crisis. We discover that doing right things as God defines right and resilience are intricately intertwined. We need to keep trusting God, pursue God's purpose for our lives and we need to let go of our anger. By doing these things when a crisis happens in our lives, we can be resilient and bounce back.

Genesis: 20 The Beginning of Hope in the Promises of God: A Life of Abraham
Abraham was protecting himself or the promise. Either way he was trying to save himself on his own terms, and failed to trust God, and allowed his fear of man dominate his relationship with God and his wife. He often stumbled because of this fear, whether or not it was a fear of man, or a fear of his wife, he wasn’t able to be bold when he needed to be, because he was trying to protect some very dear things in his mind, and he feared giving them over to God.

I Didn't See It Coming
God often works in ways that are different than normal human ways of doing things. And God usually uses normal human behavior to accomplish his plans. But we can be sure that God is always working his ultimate plan through this mess we call life. This beginning of the story of Joseph sets in motion events that are setting the stage for the future. Though God doesn't tell anyone what he is doing, he is bringing about his plan through the life of Joseph and his brothers.
