Facing Suffering and Temptation
In our approach to God in prayer during suffering or when facing temptation, we should look to Jesus praying at Gethsemane just before his betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection. We look at two passages: Mt 26:36-46 and Luke 22:40-46.

Does God Answer Prayer?
Does God hear and answer our prayers? Yes, but sometimes we question Him when things don't seem to be going our way. We should remember that God often answers our prayers not by giving us what we want, but by giving us what we need.

Sorrowful Unto Death
In one of the most moving passages in the Gospel, Mark recounts Jesus' agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. As one commentary put it, "On the cross Jesus' body was crucified; in the Garden, his soul was crucified." We see Jesus stagger under the weight of "the cup," a Biblical image describing God's just punishment of sin. In the Garden, the Father gives Jesus a glimpse of the hell that awaits him if he chooses the cross. In a final act of surrender, Jesus settles the issue in prayer and rises from his knees to give his life.

A Place Called Gethsemane (Mark 14:32-42)
In the garden we see two provisions God has made for our sin. First, we see our suffering Savior, who suffered and died in our place to bear our sin and guilt -- this is our justification. Second, we see the provision that God has made through prayer to help us resist temptation and sin day to day -- this is our sanctification.

The Heart of Indifference
The last week of Jesus' life on earth was one filled with tension and activity. On Thursday night, Jesus led His disciples into an upper room and instituted the Lord's Supper. Soon after, they traveled into the garden called Gethsemane. Here Jesus took His closest disciples deeper into the garden with Him. Jesus then revealed His heart to them and asked them to "watch and pray" with Him. Unfortunately, all three of them fell asleep.

Fight or Flight
How do you respond when you're afraid? Mark 14:27-52 gives us two pictures of facing fear; specifically, the fear of doing the will of God.
