Dealing With the Past: You Can Run, But You Cannot Hide
Jacob had fled from Esau in order to both protect himself and find a wife. He did both through Laban, but after twenty years he needed to flee from Laban. In his departure from Laban he is once again must deal with his past as Esau and his four hundred men come to meet him, his family and abundant wealth. In having to deal with Esau, Jacob is having to deal with the past consequences of his sin. He attempts to do this by once again relying upon his own strategy and resources. Several important terms and Jacob's own admission reveal to us that Jacob is attempting to atone for his sin through his strategy. But such an approach is not necessary. Through it all we see Jacob having to deal with God in his dealing with his past. It all teaches us valuable lessons about what it means to have God save you from sin.
