Sermons About Goodness
When Being Good Isn't Good Enough
When the Bible talks about salvation, it means that God Himself comes into your life and connects with you and commits to you and promises you that every little thing is going to be all right and nothing will every separate you from Him. It means he forgets every fault, washes away every stain, tells you he loves you, promises that he is going to put right everything that is out of joint and promises that you are going to enjoy the awesome perfection of his eternal kingdom forever and ever.

God is Sovereign
God is great and God is good! He sees through the narrow lens - He hates sin and hurts with and for us, but at the same time, He sees through the wide lens of all time. He is all about His own ultimate glory and His own purposes. What we can see is the broken, discolored pieces of our lives. We need to trust in the sovereignty of God, that He will work the pieces into a God-glorifying work of art. A beautiful mosaic.

The Power of the Spirit on the Narrow Road
God in His grace has given us His Holy Spirit to work in our hearts so that our inward attitudes are right and this leads to holy outward behavior. The fruit of living with the Holy Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Because these traits only come from living with the Holy Spirit it is vital for us to stop, set aside our busyness and distractions, and spend time reading the Scriptures and in prayer so that we can listen to what the Spirit says and live by His power.

Walking with the Spirit on the Narrow Road
It is common to hear that all world religions are basically the same and this is said because their ethics overlap in many areas. Christianity is unique in that you are reconciled with God through faith and not through doing these good works. It is also unique in addressing the root cause for our inability to live up to these ethics: our sinful, deceitful hearts which desire to rebel against Him. God gives His Holy Spirit to Christians to rebuild their hearts so they begin to desire to walk in His ways. If we walk with the Holy Spirit by repenting of our sins, praying for His help to obey Him, learning from the Scriptures that He inspired, and stirring our affections for Christ, we can overcome the desires of our sinful hearts and live how He has called us to live.

Supernatural Goodness
The Bible teaches that goodness in our lives is not a mere passive quality, like something that you are. It's the deliberate preference of right to wrong, the firm and persistent resistance of all moral evil, and the choosing and following of all that is morally good. For the Christian, being good is a choice that involves decisions about our behavior--decisions between good or evil, between right and wrong.

2 Samuel 2:1-11 - A Tale of 2 Kingdoms
One needs to understand the importance of humility in leadership. This passage shows a contrast in a leaders who power is based on Humility (David) and one whose power is based on human pride and autonomy. David seeks God in his efforts to rule and while Abner and Ishbosheth seek only their own Advantage in their efforts to rule. David is a great type of a christian who that those who trust God must be humble by acknowledge sinfulness and weakness through an intimate relationship with God in prayer.

Honored and Humiliated
What kind of dance is YOUR dance? Do you tap or tango? Break dance or line dance? King David did his own dance before the Lord in the city of Jerusalem as the Ark of the Covenant was being brought in. His wife called it embarrassing, but David asserted that he was willing to be even MORE undignified because what may have felt humiliating was actually honorable in the sight of God. Are we willing to do our God-dance without shame or reservation? God's goodness is all around us. We should celebrate it!

Faith in the Face of Misery
Suffering prompts us to ask lots of difficult questions. The Book of Job is about a man who suffered, and didn't know why. But Job expressed his faith both in God's goodness and sovereignty. So will we.
