Keeping Perspective in Suffering (Romans 5:3-5)
As Christians we are to rejoice in our trials and sufferings because 1) they are part of God's agenda for us, 2) God will use them to forge a Christian hope in us, and 3) God will use them to forge a certain hope in us. Though we are tempted to disorientation and despair during times of suffering and trial, we can surely trust in God's promises and love to sustain us through trials, and even to bring a Godly rejoicing and hope in the midst of them.

The Hope of the Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Our view of Christ's work and our work should reflect 1 Corinthians 15. The emphasis is on Christ's work: 1) Christ's resurrection motivates and empowers our work; 2) Christ's resurrection secures our resurrection; and 3) Christ's resurrection fuels hope for this life. Because of Christ's work, we can be steadfast, immovable, and abounding in the work the Lord has for us.

The Transfiguration
The Transfiguration of Jesus is an incredibly important event in the history of Jesus. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, the transfiguration is the authoritative answer to the question, “Who is this man? Who is this that commands the wind and waves and they obey Him? Who is this that even forgives sins?” These are the kinds of questions asked in the first three Gospels and are answered at the transfiguration. After the transfiguration, the hinge of the first three Gospels is swung and Jesus begins His move towards Jerusalem to eventually face betrayal, false trials, and His death as a criminal on a Roman cross. It is the climax of the first portion of the Gospels.

Stewards of the Story in Our Speaking
2 Timothy 2:23-26; 1 Peter 3:15 For too many years "evangelism" has been understood as "us vs. them." It has largely been seen as "telling", and has, in our day, even turned at times to "yelling." But, is this true to the Gospel and the model we find in Jesus? What does it mean to "speak" the Gospel in the course of life, among the people with whom we live and work? Today we examine how the Apostles understood Jesus' command to share the Gospel, and we will find that it not only relates to our mouths, but also our ears, our hands, our feet ... to all of who we are in Christ!

Judging Others
"Judge not..." was a command given by Jesus to each and every Christian in regards to the way they view other people. At the heart of Jesus's command was something far deeper than simply making external changes in the way we view or treat others. We find Jesus consistently wants us to look inward to see where the problem really lies. This week we examine an often-quoted passage of Scripture that is sure to devastate egos and self-views, yet provides the only solution available for addressing our hypocrisy in the Gospel.

Why the Local Church? (Ephesians 4:11-16)
In God's design, the local church is to serve as 1) a place to hear God's word preached and applied in a systematic way; 2) a place to put our commitment to God, and to one another, into practice; 3) a context for us to mature; 4) a place to discover and practice our ministry and spiritual gifts with perspective and leadership; 5) a protection from doctrinal error; 6) a place to demonstrate the gospel; and 7) a place to preserve and cultivate the fruit of the gospel.

The Gospel
Many people today know bits and pieces of the Bible but have no clear, concise understanding of what the Bible teaches. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the focal point of the plan of redemption and it can be summarized in the following four points: 1. GOD: WHO HE IS = There is a God who deserves to be glorified. • “The God who made the world and all things in it…is Lord of heaven and earth….He Himself gives life and breath to all things; and He made from one, every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth…that they should seek God” (Acts 17:24-27). • The Bible explains that God created us and sustains us and therefore has the right to absolute authority over our lives. He made us in His image so that we would seek to know Him and glorify Him with our lives (i.e. love Him, honor Him, obey Him, and serve Him). 2. MAN: OUR PROBLEM = Man refuses to glorify God and deserves to be punished. • “The Lord looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God….There is none who understands, there is none who seeks for God…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God….the wages of sin is death” (Ps. 14:2; Rom. 3:11, 23; 6:23). • Instead of seeking to know and glorify God, we naturally rebel against His authority over us and choose to live our own way. The Bible says that failing to honor and obey God is sin. The just penalty for our sin is death; not just physical death, but eternal separation from God in hell. 3. JESUS: GOD’S SOLUTION = Jesus Christ died and rose from the dead so we can be saved. • “For while we were still helpless…God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God” (Rom. 5:6, 8-9). • Because of His great love, God has provided a way for us to be rescued from hell. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin. Jesus endured the punishment that we deserve and rose again to prove that God’s wrath had been satisfied and God’s justice had been served, making it possible for God to forgive us and offer us eternal life. 4. YOU: THE RESPONSE = The command to repent and believe in Jesus Christ must be obeyed. • “Seek the Lord while He may be found…Let the wicked forsake His way…and let him return to the Lord, and He will have compassion on him….He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (Isa. 55:6-7; Jn. 3:36).

Prayer and the Gospel
As we finish our discussion on the mission of the Vintage Faith Community, we must conclude with the humble confession that we cannot do this on our own. Tonight we talk about the kind of praying that energized the early church into this mission.

Philippians 1:3-6 - Joyous Thanksgiving
In American Society we are tempted to domesticate the Gospel through secularization, self-indulgence, and pluralism. We don't want to abandon Christianity but we marginalize and privatize it. We are more concerned about being comfortable and secure than with the truth of the Gospel. Paul's thanksgiving was joyful in the fact that the Philippians did not marginalize the Gospel of Christ but in fact participated in it. Gospel Fellowship always exceeds all earthly fellowship because it is rooted in God in an eternal quest. We see Paul’s thanksgiving grounded in 3 things: 1) A Thankful Remembrance, 2) A Thankful Fellowship, and 3) A Thankful Confidence or Assurance. It is not your grip on God that has made the difference or will make the difference in your life, but God's grip on you. In these 3 verses you learn not to be confident in your goodness, character, history, perseverance, but in God. Paul's joy and thanksgiving comes not because he attended a hotdog fellowship with the Philippians but because they suffered for something Greater - the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is God's work in us that is a cause for great thanksgiving. Is God Working in you so that you? If he is you will be participating in the Gospel.

The Call of Christ
What we see in the chapter we’re in this morning is a basic outline of what it means to be called by Christ as His disciple. This pattern runs through each Gospel and it runs through the New Testament. If Jesus is who He says He is, what does it mean to be called by Him and live that out?

Stewards of the Story in Our Silence
2 Timothy 1:3-12 Once we have fallen in love with the Gospel and shudder at the thought of His amazing grace, what then? Before we run after every unbeliever we know, we must learn to steward the story of the Gospel in Silence. Laboring, through the power of the Spirit, to build the inner components of spiritual character. Does your life, before you ever open your mouth to speak of Jesus, speak of Jesus? As stewards, we must carefully and diligently pay attention to our own lives so as to not obscure the story of God.

The Gift of Community (1 John 1:1-7)
Christian community is built around our shared experience of the gospel. Community always begins with God, and God gives us community as a means of transforming our lives more and more into the image of his son. However, community is not merely a tool for growth, but also a gift from God for our joy as well as for our good.

Masculine Spirituality (Joshua 1:8-9)
God intends for men to invest ourselves in the lives of others, working for his purposes rather than our own. We are to influence others for good, helping them to understand and pursue Christ-likeness. This begins with our families, but extends to God's church and also to the unbelievers that God has placed in our lives. Our serving others requires selfless sacrifice on our part, but God will provide us the grace and strength to be faithful to our calling as we obey.

Philippians 1:1-2 - A Captive Joy
We normally think that Philippians is all about joy, and that is of course a major theme when it flashes forth 16 times. But it is sparked by the deeper themes of Paul’s letter. Philippians calls us to a particular kind of joy - a joy that was experience by Paul in Roman captivity facing a capital charge while his leadership was being contested. In this sermon we will look at acts 16 and see the journey Paul took to get to Philippi with his companions (Luke, Timothy, and Silas) including the Macedonia call by the Spirit of God. Secondly we will look at Paul's reception by 3 different people in Acts 16 when he arrives at Philippi. Finally, we will look at the occasion for this letter late in Paul's imprisonment at Rom (probably after 62 AD). My desire and prayer is that you will see the servant heart of Paul in fellowship with the Philippians Christians was based on making Christ the center of the letter and the motivation of His joy.

The Nature of Faith (Romans 4:13-25)
Paul references the promises of God to Abraham, the ultimate fulfillment of which is the restoration of fellowship with God and the establishment of God's kingdom in the new heavens and new earth. Abraham and his descendants will be heirs of the world. Paul clearly demonstrates that it was not obedience that secured this promise to Abraham, but Abraham's faith in God and God's grace toward Abraham. Works and reward are utterly opposed to faith and promises. Just as with Abraham, we do not inherit God's promises by obedience or lineage, but we inherit God's promises by faith in God. We too will experience restoration of fellowship with God, and will participate in his eternal kingdom!
