Our culture has turned gossip into a commodity that is bought and sold. We have made talking about others in a negative way the norm. Paul calls our mouth an open sewage leak and encourages that we build up others with our words instead.

When we criticize or judge others we hurt one another, we are judging the Law, we are playing 'god' and exalting ourselves. James makes it very clear that as believers, we are not to speak evil against one another and that there is only one Judge and Lawgiver.
