The Church of Pergamum: Revelation 2:12-27
The church at Pergamum, much like many of our American churches, was filled with three kinds of people: the faithful, the compromisers, and the people who didn’t know which group was correct. As the political capital of the region, emperor worship was at its zenith in Pergamum; it was the place where Satan had his throne. In this context, Jesus rebukes the faithful for tolerating people in their church who are both compromising and telling others that it is ok to compromise. He calls the church at Pergamum and us to confront sin, root it out, and fight it. Our Savior calls us to repent of everything that threatens us from knowing and experiencing the fullness of joy that he has come to offer.

A Better Offering
The blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ was a better offering than any other in history. Old Testament sacrifices were offered on earth, His was in heaven; they were temporary, His was permanent; they were imperfect, His was perfect; they couldn't purify the heart, His could; they couldn't provide eternal security, but His promises us heaven.

Confusion
40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. 41Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. 43And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, 44but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, 45and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. 46After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress." 49And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?" 50And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. 52And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

A Better Sanctuary
Everything that is pictured in the Old Testament is better in Christ. All aspects of His priesthood, the tabernacle, His ministry, and now the sanctuary are improved in Christ. Why would anyone go looking somewhere else to find the satisfaction and fulfilment that can only be found in Jesus?

A Better Ministry
Jesus Christ is far superior to any other religious offering. This passage points out how Jesus is better in three areas. All of them work together to provide Christians with a better ministry than we could ever ask for. Why would we go looking for something better?

Jesus is Better
This is our fourth week looking at the person and work of Jesus Christ. We consider this week the first chapter of Hebrews to see that no one has a resume like Jesus. He is preeminent over creation and redemption. He is better.

My Priest Is Better Than Your Priest
The priesthood of Jesus, pictured in Melchizadek, is superior to any other priesthood in history. This message lists three reasons why Jesus is a better high priest than any other. Because of his character and sacrifice, we can truly say that My Priest is Better Than Your Priest.
