The Successful Failure
Jonah 1-4 On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of man's first steps on the moon, many argue that the feat marked NASA's finest hour. Others, however, consider NASA's finest hour to have been Apollo 13, which was two missions later. In that mission, a serious explosion severely crippled the command module and jeopardized the astronaut's ability to return to earth. Even though the ultimate mission, to land men on the moon, was a failure, NASA's remarkable engineering feats led to the safe return of the astronauts. Thus, the mission of Apollo 13 was dubbed "The Successful Failure". Like Apollo 13, we can think about the Old Testament figure Jonah as a successful failure too. The four chapters that comprise the book of Jonah correspond to four scenes that demonstrate Jonah's failure and God's success. The four chapters of Jonah illustrate his: 1. Reluctance (Ch. 1) 2. Repentance (Ch. 2) 3. Compliance (Ch. 3) 4. Petulance (Ch. 4) Like Jonah, the entire nation of Israel can be considered a successful failure. Even though they killed their Messiah, God's faithfulness to forgive turned that grievous failure into a glorious success. In Jonah's case, God used his experience in the belly of the great fish to bring him to repentance and compliance so that he would witness to all in Nineveh about the one true God. In the same way, the story of Jonah is really a story that God uses to remind Israel of their missionary purpose. The moral of the story of Jonah is that God loves the lost. The story highlights the grace and mercy of our great forgiver... and the greatest forgiver is the God of the Bible. Will you not have compassion for those who will perish without a personal relationship with the God of Israel - the one true God of the Bible? Is there any Jonah in your heart? We should ask God to give us His heart for the lost.

Exchanging Lies for Truth
The problem with Israel is our own, it is the gap between what we believe in theory and what we believe in practice. I may agree that God is sovereign (theoretical belief), but slip into deep anxiety when I am afraid or out of control (functional disbelief). What it means to grow in grace is to see the gap narrowed between what I confess to be truth and what I functionally believe in the moment. If it’s true that behind every sin is a lie, we are able to find a road out of the rut of despair and the feeling that our emotions and actions are inevitable. Nehemiah is helping us to see the path of hope in hopelessness, joy in the midst of suffering, and courage to fight our shame and disbelief.

Spiritual Adultery
We like to the think of our sin in G-rated terms (mistakes, errors in judgment), but God gives us an R-rated label (spiritual adultery).

Occupied Territory
Jesus was sent into a hostile world by God the Father to engage his enemies until they became his friends. We are sent by Jesus into the same hostile world to engage our enemies until they become the friends of Christ that we can name among our brothers and sisters.
