Sermons About John-the-baptist
22-JUN-2008 Matthew 11 The Good News as Told by Matthew
John the Baptist embraces a powerless position voluntarily ad a prophet in the wilderness and ministers with great effect, even to the point of proclaiming Jesus as the messiah. However, when powerlessness is forced upon him through imprisonment, he begins to question Jesus in the role of Messiah. Do we embrace the place of powerlessness only when we have the power to pick it up or lay it down? Or can we really have no power, no say, in the situation of life?

Following Jesus to the River's edge
This morning in our worship we consider the baptism of Jesus and will explore the reasons behind His willingness to be baptized, particularly when there was no apparent need for it. If John’s baptism was for repentance and the forgiveness of sins (Mark 1:4), then why would the sinless lamb of God even ask to be baptized? In this mornings sermon we will look at the Purpose, the Picture, and the Power given to us through this historic event in the life of Jesus from Matthew’s account in chapter three, verses 13-17.

The Forerunner: John the Baptist
John the Baptist The Man, The Message, and the legacy. Jesus called John the greatest man born of woman. It wasn't because of his appearance, or how much money he had, It was because he submitted his life to Christ as we are all to do. The kingdom of heaven is near, just like it was in John's day. Jesus is coming soon the question is will we be ready. Will we be able to say that we have allowed Jesus to be more and self to be less?

What About Baptism
"What About Baptism" Matthew 3:11-17 11-12"I'm baptizing you here in the river, turning your old life in for a kingdom life. The real action comes next: the main character in this drama--compared to him I'm a mere stagehand--will ignite the kingdom life within you, a fire within you, the Holy Spirit within you, changing you from the inside out. He's going to clean house--make a clean sweep of your lives. He'll place everything true in its proper place before God; everything false He'll put out with the trash to be burned." 13-14Jesus then appeared, arriving at the Jordan River from Galilee. He wanted John to baptize Him. John objected, "I'm the one who needs to be baptized, not you!" 15But Jesus insisted. "Do it. God's work, putting things right all these centuries, is coming together right now in baptism." So John did it. 16-17The moment Jesus came up out of the baptismal waters, the skies opened up and He saw God's spirit--it looked like a dove--descending and landing on Him. And along with the Spirit, a voice: "This is my Son, chosen and marked by My love, delight of My life."

John 3:22-36 - This is Jesus: The Supreme Son of God
There are two root desires at the heart of the universe that are in opposition to one another and have been at war ever since the fall of Satan and the fall of Man: * Jealousy for the glory of God – the great desire to see that God receives all the glory and honor and praise that is rightfully his. * Jealousy of the glory of God – the great desire to have for oneself the glory that God alone deserves.

Come In, The Water's Fine
The purpose of this sermon is to convince lost souls to accept Christ and get baptized into Him. The reason the story in the Bible text is significant to our lives today is why Jesus allowed Himself to be baptized. You see, many of His reasons for baptism should be ours, too.

John 1:29-34 - This is Jesus: The Son of God (John the Baptist's Testimony - Part 3)
I have one point in this morning’s sermon. It is this: Jesus is the Spirit-anointed King, whose arrival inaugurates the new age of end-time salvation in which God’s Spirit is poured out upon his people.

John the baptist
Unfortunately the recording quality is very poor and part of the beginning is cut off. The evening was begun by asking the students to write down 5 short phrases to describe Jesus, then a clip from The Truman Show was played in which Truman begins to realize his life is not what he thought and his wife is merely an actress.
The teaching centers around Matthew 11 when John the Baptist wonders if he really knows who Jesus is, and the struggles we may face to know who Jesus is and our tendencies to shape him into our image.

Liking Repentance
The word 'repentance' has always brought up a negative feeling for me (maybe just too many people telling me to repent when I was younger). But repentance is actually a very positive walk into the grace and acceptance of God. Instead of binding and condemning us, it treats us as free sons and daughters liberated by the grace of God. Because God is good, and committed to be good to me in my sin, I can embrace repentance daily. Shoot, even hourly!

The Journey of the Kingdom
We see in Priscilla and Aquilla's encounter with Apollos, and Pauls encounter with the 12 disciples of John the Baptist, the reality that life in the Kingdom is a beginning and not and end. It is a journey, and we are all in process.

The Message That Changed Our World
The message that changed the world was introduced by John the Baptist. He burst upon the scene announcing a new kingdom with a flaming voice preaching REPENTANCE. John was a unique and bold prophet calling on everyone to repent regardless of class or religious status. The purpose of his message was to soften people's hearts and prepare them for the coming of Jesus.
