Jesus appeared to take away sins. This brings us great hope not only in justification -- our being made right with God -- but also in sanctification, as he empowers us in the battle against indwelling sin.

The Reformation recaptured the biblical doctrine in order to recapture a biblical lifestyle. In Zechariah 3, God removes Joshua's filthy, sin-stained garments and gives him precious new garments to fulfill his vocation. This symbolizes the double transfer of justification.
