Sermons About Legalism
The Pharisees' Definition Of Unclean And God's Definition Of Unclean Are Completely Different
This is the first digital recording of Pastor Miles Valley's sermon. It's about legalism. The Pharisees' definition of unclean and God's definition of unclean are completely different and totally opposed to each other.

Obstacles to Jesus
Christians often emphacize doing things, rather than becoming things. Focusing on outward actions wrongly takes precedence over inward transformation. This mindset becomes an obstacle to Jesus, because we falsely associate salvation and a relationship with Jesus with our own sense of "goodness". In turn, this is communicated to our neighbors, our friends, and the rest of the world by both our actions and words. Thankfully, the Gospel stands in complete opposition to this obstacle and tears down the walls we often build. Join us as we re-learn the gospel of grace, which we've been called to live and share.

Walking with Grace (Psalm 103)
Life is filled with all sorts of landscape. An all terrain faith is equally balanced for the breathtaking view from the mountaintop and the confusing trek though a cold, dark valley. It provides adequate support for walking in rough, rocky stretches and stability for the slippery spots. In this exploration of the Psalms, we will see that no matter where you find yourself in life there is an appropriate faith response to your life situation. Are you ready for the hike?

Only Jesus Breaks The Power Of Legalism - Colossians 2:16-23
le-gal-ism (LEE-guh-liz-uhm) [n.]: 1) An attempt to save ourselves by our own moral or religious effort 2) Placing our identity in our moral or religious performance, belonging to the "right" religious group (or subgroup, or sub-subgroup) 3) Trusting in religion, rather than Christ, to provide what we need for life and our connection with God Just as there were some in the Colossian church who were trying to tell others that they were somehow "disqualified" to receive God's love and care, there are often voices telling us the same. Maybe it's because of what we wear or what we eat or drink, and the voices can come from varied sources -- other people, churches, even ourselves. Regardless, believing this can cause us to rely on some outward action -- not Christ -- to re-connect us with God. The Apostle Paul warns us against these things, assuring us that in Christ, God has already qualified us.

The Community of the Spirit
The community of the Spirit is the community of the cross. Sin is not fatal or scandalous because restoration is possible, and the members take responsibility for self and one another. We then live by the Spirt not mocking God with self-indulgence or growing weary of self-righteousness. And our passion is not cross avoidance and impressing people but glorying in the wonders of the cross and our subsequent new cretaion.

Christians are sons but how should we live? Not as slaves to rule keeping but by grace. Enjoying the gospel. These are the final three nails in the coffin of rule-keeping - 1. Rule keeping is idolatry 2. Rule keeping is joyless 3. Rule keeping is futureless

Justification - Legalism -- Galatians 2:15-21 (Part 2)
One of the things that every Christian struggles with is legalism, but at the same time many Christians don't know what legalism is. This sermon looks more carefully at what legalism is and how it is a danger, at what both justification and sanctification mean, and how to diagnose legalism in your life as a Christian

Grace and Legalism
Can subtle expectations by others or ourselves put more pressure on us than the very gospel we were saved into? Do people not in the church see Chrisitans as people in bondage to heavy laws and burdens? If so, is that view valid?

Freedom on the Narrow Road
Throughout the ages the church has had a bad habit of adding rules to God’s good commands in Scripture in an effort to try earn God’s acceptance by good works and to prevent people from sinning. The Apostle Paul had to confront the Galatians because they were trying to add old Jewish rituals like circumcision and particular feasts and festivals to the requirements for being right with God. Paul exhorted the Galatians, and you and I in turn, to fight for the freedom that God bought for us by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die for us and to not submit to the slavery that comes from living by rules. He then reminded the Galatians and us not to use our blood-bought freedom to be selfish and sinful but instead to love each other.

Christ Our Completion
In the Christian life we must fight to keep a relationship with God based on the merits of Christ, not our own. We can often substitute God's grace for moralism, or religious performance. In this sermon Saul Seibert reminds us that as Christians, we've been redeemed from the debt that sin incurred through Christ’s work on the cross. Therefore we must resist the lure of legalism by continually re-orientating ourselves to the gospel.

Hypocrisy and Legalism: Death Masquerading as Life
Luke 11:37-12:3 In this text, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and Scribes who had substituted a man-made system for heartfelt love and pursuit of God. Built on hypocrisy, legalism claims to offer life, but in reality, it leads only to death.

Imagine a culture that is in love with itself; a culture that pursues wealth and pleasure at all costs. Now place in that culture two predominant types of Christians: one that is trying to impose all kinds of rules on its people and one that is indistinguishable from the world around them. Does this culture sound familiar? You guessed it: it's the ancient Island of Crete. But it could be us, couldn't it? And just like the Island of Crete, we are called to live a lifestyle that is neither legalistic nor ungodly.

John 9:1-41 - The Gift of Seeing Christ
Jesus worked a miracle by not only giving sight to a man born blind but also enabling him to see Christ as the Messiah and believe in Him. The Pharisees were blinded by their misguided self-righteous rulekeeping and couldn't see what was really valuable to God.

John 7:21-39 - Arresting God
Jesus went to a celebration to tell the people that He was the Messiah and the fulfillment of their celebration. The authorities tried to arrest Jesus because they were too stubborn to believe in Him as they were hung up on their man-made rules and were unwilling to admit to their own sinfulness and need for forgiveness.

John 2:1-11 - The God of Nature Revealed in the Best Wine Ever Made
There are aspects of story of Jesus turning water into wine that are difficult for some people to accept. Some try to explain away the miracle, and some try to explain away the wine. Neither of these attempts is faithful to the text. Jesus first displayed his glory by coming to the aid of a wedding party with the best wine ever created.

John 1:15-34 - A Wild Man in Court
Lawyers are not very well liked in our society because some of them are more concerned with procedures, precedents, and technicalities than they are with people and justice. In the same way, the Pharisees in the first century were more concerned with carrying out the regulations of the law than they were about loving God and other people. John the Baptist understood that the Scriptures were there to point us to the Messiah, 'the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world,' who is Jesus Christ.
