The Dangers of Adding to What Matters Most
In our passage, the Apostle Paul warns us of the dangers of religiosity, false spirituality and asceticism. We will consider these dangers as we reflect on what our passage has to say.
The Older Lost Faithful Son
Yeah...this son is lost even more. Way more lost. Because he doesn't know he's lost. Does this son repent or does he kill the father? History has written the ending of this story.
Resolve to Flee Legalism
The Jesus of Matthew 23 is not the Jesus that we see in paintings and kids story books. This Jesus is filled with a righteous anger toward, not the prostitutes and sinners, but the religious people. Listen as pastor Lance Parrott challenges us to identify legalistic, rule-keeping religion in our lives and flee from it. Hear how Jesus wants us to run from religion and by faith into his arms.
Gospel-Driven Godliness and Church Leadership, Part 11
In 1:5-16, Paul explains why Titus’ appointment of qualified leadership (vv. 5-9) and opposition to unqualified leadership (vv. 10-16) in the Cretan churches is so important, namely because there are many false teachers in Crete turning people away from the centrality of the gospel (1:11, 14). In order to help Titus and the churches recognize and oppose ungodly leadership, Paul gives 12 characteristics of false teachers and 2 action steps to take in order to prevent them from harming the church.
Gospel-Driven Godliness and Church Leadership, Part 10
Paul left Titus in Crete to set what remained unfinished in order (1:5). One pressing matter that was unfinished was the appointment of elders. Godly leadership is vital to a properly ordered church. In 1:10-16, Paul explains why Titus’ appointment of qualified leadership and opposition to unqualified leadership in the Cretan churches is so important, namely because there are many false teachers in Crete turning people away from the centrality of the gospel. So, in order to help Titus and the churches recognize and oppose ungodly leadership, Paul gives 12 characteristics of false teachers and 2 action steps to take in order to prevent them from harming the church.
A Tale of Two Gospels 3: The Slavery of Legalism
Opposite of the extreme of license, the other extreme of legalism is just as threatening to the spiritual health of the believer. This teaching helps explain why some Christians feel defeated and unfulfilled in their spiritual lives.
Gospel-Driven Godliness and Church Leadership, Part 9
The need to be self-consciously gospel-centered is exactly what was being threatened in the Cretan churches.
Word Wars
Well let's open our Bibles this morning as we continue our study through an epistle that the Holy Spirit inspired through the apostle Paul just days before he was beheaded by the Roman Emperor Nero b/c Paul is one of the leading Christians of the day who refused to embrace every ick, ism and spasm found throughout the Greek culture ... who could not bow at the Roman altar of pluralism which involved acknowledging Caesar as Lord ... who offended his former Jewish associates by insisting that the reconciliation of man was not found through religious sacrament but through the atoning work of Christ alone ... who as God ... satisfied the just wrath of God for sin ... and as a Man without sin reconciled men of every tongue, tribe and nation who are born again in Him by grace ... through faith in His finished work of redemption. So these are the last words of the apostle Paul on earth. If you only had a short time to live ... what would you say to those ... you loved the most ... knowing you were about to die?
A Better Way To Live
How are we to live? How can we live in the manner in which we want to live? Do we have the power to transform our lives through truth? How?
