Christ's teaching is clear: Do not retaliate when you have been wronged. This is completely against human nature. It is second nature to hit somebody who hit you first. And without divine intervention we will never be able to constrain ourselves. Scripture is clear. If you want to become part of the Kingdom of Heaven, your righteousness has to exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees.
Jesus did not come to soften The Law. He did not come to abolish The Law. He came to fulfill It and give us the spiritual nature of The Law. When He says: "You have heard that it was said ........, but......". Here He explains in depth the meaning of what was said by piercing our hearts. Thou shalt not murder does not only apply to killing a fellow human being. It speaks to abortion, suicide, stay angry with one another. It speaks to ANY harm to mankind that is premeditated. We all are made in Gods image!
