The Samaritan woman
The familiar story of Jesus with the Samaritan woman is packed with significance. The route he took with his disciples was not the regular way of getting to Galillee - he "had" to go that way; he was there on purpose. The woman came out to the well on her own, in the hottest part of the day; she was a social outcast. Also, it was culturally unacceptable for Jesus, a man, to be talking to her, a woman - even on on her own! Not only that, but he taught her - something no rabbi would have done. Jesus puts himself out for us, breaks the social rules to reach us, to teach us. And the teaching? That only Jesus can satisfy our spiritual thirst; not sport, money, relationships... only Jesus!

On That Day, There Will Be a Purifying Fountain - Zechariah 13
Zechariah, chapter 13, is all about purity! A fountain flows to take away sin, a remnant is refined by the fire, and a shepherd is stricken so that the sheep will scatter. Wait a minute! How does that third point relate? How does the quest for devotion and purity -- the kind that would even see parents slaying their children if they became false prophets -- relate to a shepherd being stricken? It's an important Old Testament reference because Jesus will quote it directly as relating to him! What did Jesus try to teach his disciples by quoting Zechariah 13?

How thirsty are you?
HOW THIRSTY ARE YOU? John 7:37-39) Pentecost Sunday 37. On the last day and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out with a loud voice saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. Historical setting of this scripture: Do you Know What you are Thirsty for? Come to Me Drink Believe in Me as the Scriptures say Out of your heart will flow rivers (springs) of living water What is the Nature of These Springs? The living Springs come by receiving the Holy Spirit The supernatural Springs flowing from this Rock are now in us The power effected in us goes far beyond our natural ability The Springs can dry up and they can be revived The Holy Spirit came on Pentecost (Acts 1: 4-8; 2: 1-42) They waited because they were thirsty The Holy Spirit came upon them in a visible presence It turned cowardly persons hung up with their personal junk into bold powerful ambassadors for Christ. Miracles, signs, wonders, gifts and fruit came with the Spirit The promise of the Holy Spirit is to all men, women, sons and daughters Let those who are thirsty come; and let all who wish take the free gift of the water of life. (Revelation 22:17)

The Spirit Quenches our Heart-Thirsts
We've all got heart-thirsts -- emptiness, longings, cravings, insecurities. And Jesus promises to completely satisfy all our heart thirsts when we come to Him and drink -- by giving us the Holy Spirit. In this sermon we talk about how this works, and how we can live in this experience of having our heart-thirsts quenched by Jesus.
