KNOWING AND LOVING GOD AS WE PREACH AND TEACH HIS WORD (Ezra 7:1-10 ● Message #1/2) 09-19-2010
INTRODUCTION. 1. What is the Bible? 2. The Book of Ezra (events beginning in 538 B.C.). ● Ezra 1 – 6 (the Temple is rebuilt, finished in 516 B.C.). ● Ezra 7 – 10 (Ezra arrives, 458 B.C.; Nehemiah arrives in 445 B.C.). ● Themes in Ezra: God’s Sovereignty & Faithfulness to His people, and His on-going call for their covenantal-faithfulness to Him. ● Background: Trials & Compromise. God’s people are enduring various trials and have backslidden into spiritual compromise. KNOWING AND LOVING GOD. 1. By Studying His Word: ● with a Right Heart & Theology. → Seeking to know and love God! → Believing the God-breathed Scriptures). ● according to Biblical Principles. → Read God’s Word daily. → Study God’s Word as the church. → Use godly-biblical resources. 2. By Obeying His Word: ● as a faithful remnant (amidst the trials of Life, in the joy of the Lord, and unto the glory of God). ● with the freedom of Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit. PREACHING & TEACHING GOD’S WORD 1. Some Theological Highlights: ● the Purpose for Preaching and Teaching: to proclaim the gospel, and to live holy lives as God’s people, for His glory (making disciples). ● the Command to Preach and Teach: keep God’s Word central in the church and the family, and do so with a loving-spirit. ● the High Calling for Preaches and Teachers: to preach and teach as ones accountable to God who are honored by His call. ● the Divine Power in Preaching and Teaching: expect God’s Word to work effectually in the lives of those who “hear”. ● the Charge to the Church: “Hear” the Word of God and obey it. 2. Some Biblical Themes: Preach and Teach… ● the greatness and glory of God. ● a “Christ-centered” salvation history. ● the importance of God’s covenant with His people. ● God’s priority and standards for the family. ● God’s call to live by faith (including women, youth, & the weak of this world). ● God’s heart for the poor and His call to live justly. ● God’s wrath against sin, and His love and grace for sinners. ● the person of Jesus Christ, His cross, and His resurrection. ● the power of the Holy Spirit and the fellowship of the church. ● the breadth of Scripture, and do so prophetically (to the church/culture). ● the gospel as the unifying theme and Message of the Bible. ● our biblical Hope in the second coming of Jesus Christ.

We are to Love God: with our whole being (vs29-30). 2. We are to Love Our Neighbors: as ourselves (v31). 3. We must put our Faith in Jesus Christ: as the Son of God (vs32-34). LOVING MUSLIMS. 1. As our Neighbors: in obedience to God’s word. 2. By Overcoming Sinful Barriers: (our Fear, Ignorance, Pride, Prejudices). 3. By Learning about and from Muslims: (their People, History, Beliefs, etc.). 4. As Believers on Guard in Prayer: for our Enemies, for our Nation, and for the Persecuted Church. 5. And Proclaiming the Gospel: ● as Missionaries and a Missional Church; ● with a Kingdom-driven Focus; ● by Finding Common Ground; ● with Confidence in God’s Gospel!
