Sermons About Luke
The Gospel of the Cross, Part 2
Luke 23:26-49 To tell the story of the crucifixion of Jesus, Luke weaves together a complex set of themes that include both history and theology. Jesus, an innocent man, gives his life on the cross to save those who have rejected, taunted, mocked, and even executed him. Refusing to save himself, he saves the world. Rejected by mankind, he is nonetheless approved by God, and accomplishes redemption for all who will believe. This is no martyr story; rather, it is the story of the God-Man, the Hero, the Rescuer of Creation – Jesus Christ the Lord.

Making Life Work - Take Initiative
Proverbs has a unique name for lazy people. It calls them sluggards. In Boston's fast paced and hurried culture, we don't see people who are sluggards near as often as we see really hard-working people be successful in most areas of their life, except for one or two. These are places we practice a kind of selective sluggardliness. Whether in our relationships, at work, our finances, or even our spirituality, God wants us to take initiative in every single area of our life. It's part of how life works.

Who is in Charge
Luke 22:54-23:7 In 4 interrelated episodes, Luke shows that Jesus has been rejected at every level. In each case, the question revolves around who Jesus is! And, amazingly, in all four cases they miss the truth, even though it is right in front of them! This can only be explained one way: God's predetermined plan and foreknowledge have brought about this seemingly tragic set of circumstances precisely so that the Cross will be a reality.

Grief in the Garden
Luke 22:39-53 In the hours following Jesus' amazing redefining of the traditional Passover, His disciples display the extent of their lack of insight into His message. Seemingly in a state of bewildered panic, they display the true nature of their hopes while Christ patiently points them to the ways of His Kingdom. In His Kingdom, greatness is measured by humility, not assertion. In His Kingdom, the road to ruling will be long and hard and the weapons of warfare are not physical. Yet, despite His continual teaching of the Disciples, they fail to grasp His message and trust His promises and commands. This leads them to their darkest hour, where they ignore their help, they violently assert themselves and then run away in fear and shame.

The Passover Road
Luke 22:24-38 Jesus has just redefined the Passover to focus on the rescue and victory gained through His death on the cross. Amazingly, after hearing of the significance of the cross and that one of them would betray Jesus, the disciples pridefully move from discussing who the betrayer would be to who it could not be. It could not be the one who was the greatest. As they argue about who is the greatest, Jesus answers their self-focused response by redefining greatness in light of the Passover road…that victory and rescue comes through humble service and sacrifice as seen perfectly in Jesus.

The Cost of Being a Disciple
Todays sermon is taken from Luke 14:25-35. Many Christians are just like football fans. The stands are empty when team isn't playing very well. People don't attend church because a lack of commitment to Christ. Are we in it for the long haul?

The Passover and the Cross
Luke 22:1-23 As Jesus nears the time of His death, Luke depicts the opposing forces that will bring it about. In this text, Satan is working to bring about Jesus' death even as Jesus uses the Passover to teach the meaning of his death. Against the backdrop of conspiracy we see Jesus completely in charge of the events and timing of His death for sinners. And we hear His explanation of it as he reinterprets the Passover elements for his disciples, initiating the Lord's Supper.

The Rescue of the Righteous
Luke 21:25-36 As He sat with His disciples on Mt. Olivet, Jesus declared that one day the Temple they all admired would be destroyed, and Jerusalem trampled under foot. Yet, this event would only be a preview of power and judgment that would accompany the return of the Son of Man. And yet, the disciples should not panic or worry. For the return of Jesus would bring about the great rescue of the righteous … the redemption we all crave.

The Consequences of False Spirituality
Luke 21:5-24 In the longer context (21:5-38) Jesus uses the destruction of Jerusalem (near future) as a preview of what to expect when He returns (far future). He shocks his disciples with a prophetic announcement that one day the Temple will be destroyed, demonstrating the perils of that hypocritical spirituality for which the Temple had become symbol. But this is only the prelude to what the final judgment will mean for all who refuse to follow the widow’s model of humble dependence upon God.

Spirituality: False and True
Luke 20:41-21:4 What does real spirituality look like, and what is at its core? In this 3-part set of instructions, Jesus warns against those who use God for their advantage, even as He makes a heroine out of a greatly disadvantaged widow. What we learn today is essential: Our spiritual health is easily measured as we answer this question: Am I using God, or is He using me?

The Hope of Resurrection
Luke 20:27-40 As Luke comes to the end of his writing project, Jesus comes to the end of His life, and speaks of the end of the age. And it is as the "end" is beginning that we come to understand the vital place of hope in the life of those charged with extending the Kingdom authority of God through the gospel. For Christ-followers, "resurrection" is more than an event; it is the recognition that God wins in the end, and all creation is liberated from the chains and corruption of sin.

MultiCongregational Service: The Ascension and Exaltation of Jesus
We believe by the revelation of God’s Word through the Holy Spirit that God in the person of Jesus descended, He was crucified, He has risen, ascended, was exalted, and will descend again. We talk about His first descension often or what is referred to as the first advent of Jesus, and which we should. It is what is called the incarnation, where God took on human flesh. Without this you have no opportunity to have a personal relationship with God. As John 1 says, In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and all things came into being through Him…the Word became flesh. It even has its own holiday – Christmas. We talk a lot about the crucifixion of Jesus often, as well as the resurrection of Jesus, which we should. This is how sin, death, Satan, and demons have been conquered. Without this there is no salvation. This is even celebrated with specific days called Good Friday and Easter, which we celebrated the week before last. We talk and refer to Jesus descending again, referring to His second coming. We do not talk about this as often as we should, but we do talk about it. But we rarely talk about the ascension and exaltation of Jesus. This is very important to us, for the church is found on the death, resurrection and ascension of its exalted head, Jesus, which sits at the right hand of the Father. So, I want to briefly spend some time on that this morning and then my great friend Jee-Young will come give some application to this.

Philippians 1:1-2 - A Captive Joy
We normally think that Philippians is all about joy, and that is of course a major theme when it flashes forth 16 times. But it is sparked by the deeper themes of Paul’s letter. Philippians calls us to a particular kind of joy - a joy that was experience by Paul in Roman captivity facing a capital charge while his leadership was being contested. In this sermon we will look at acts 16 and see the journey Paul took to get to Philippi with his companions (Luke, Timothy, and Silas) including the Macedonia call by the Spirit of God. Secondly we will look at Paul's reception by 3 different people in Acts 16 when he arrives at Philippi. Finally, we will look at the occasion for this letter late in Paul's imprisonment at Rom (probably after 62 AD). My desire and prayer is that you will see the servant heart of Paul in fellowship with the Philippians Christians was based on making Christ the center of the letter and the motivation of His joy.

The Main Mission Of The Church
In Luke 24:36-53, Luke recorded the FIVE WAYS Jesus motivated and equipped His disciples to carry on His mission after He left. 1. He convinced them He was real (vv. 36-43) 2. He clarified their message and mission (vv. 44-47) 3. He commissioned them for their mission (v. 48) 4. He covenanted to empower them for their mission (v. 49) 5. He consecrated them for their mission (vv. 50-53)

Luke 15.11-32: Resurrection (Easter)
Thank God for Easter. It is on this day we remember the resurrection of Jesus. He suffered and died on the cross on Friday and was in the grave for three days. On the third day He raised from the grave. Today we thank for God for the resurrection. We are all in need of resurrection. To be resurrected is to be raised up. It is to be taken from one reality to a new reality. It is to be changed from the earthly to the heavenly. It is to be raised from life to death. We are all in need of this. Do you believe this?

So you want to be a Rock Star?
Summary: The modern day image of celebrity is one that admired, cheered and uplifted. Through Easter Jesus shows us a different image of a Rock Star. Scripture: Luke 9: 18-27 18 Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?" 19 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life." 20 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God." 21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 22 And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life." 23 Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? Luke 15.25-32: The Big I
Last week we saw the loose living of the younger son. This week we see the condemnation of the older son toward his younger brother. Just as the younger son broke his father's heart the older son will do the same by his duty bound relationship. May the church not be like this. May we sit with sinners at the table, so that we are invited one day to the wedding feast.

Kingdom Purity: God and Caesar
Luke 20:19-26 In the second of 4 controversies, the leaders of Jerusalem try to trap Jesus in the area of politics. Do you think God's people should support a pagan ruler and a wicked regime?
