Christmas 2007 - The Wait
Your children have it right. Christmas should be eagerly anticipated. Luke showed the significance of Christmas through the eyes of one who had waited his whole life to see the Messiah. When Simeon saw Joseph and Mary’s son he rejoiced that salvation had come, although he saw that not everyone would embrace the coming Kingdom of God. We too should rejoice and celebrate Jesus’ advent and take advantage of the opportunity to connect with God, connect with our friends and family, and reach out to those who need us during Christmas time.

Generations of Prayer Usher in the Greatest Movements in History
“HOW TO PRAY” ADVENT SERIES Generations of Prayer Usher in the Greatest Movements in History Scripture: Luke 2:1-20 The World Setting: (verses 1-3) Caesar Augustus ruled the Roman Empire for 45 years. (30 BC – 14 AD) He was a brilliant, gifted, remarkable leader. He was worshipped as a god. He ordered a census to be taken of the entire Roman Empire. Everyone has to register in their ancestral town. The National Setting: (verses 4,5) Joseph and Mary went from their home town, Nazareth, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, to register. Micah’s Prophecy: (Micah 5:2) Was spoken 700 years before Jesus is born. A ruler will be born in Bethlehem who has been alive forever. He will shepherd my people Israel. The Personal Setting: This very pregnant 13-15 year old girl is leaving home with her teenage husband to take a 3 day trip to Bethlehem. She is going to give birth with no mother present, no family, just a teenaged husband. The place of birth was a manger (feeding trough). There was no room in the inn. She wrapped him in cloths (swaddling). The importance of the night witnesses: shepherds and angels What is God’s personal word to us? Generations of prayer come together for God’s greatest movements to happen. God can and will do it again! The way of Jesus to change the world is very different. He came all the way down to bring about change. Look in the mirror of power. How do you see yourself?

When God Messes With Our Plans
Joesph and Mary never planned on what God had in store for them and their marriage. This sermon looks at the miraculous conecption of Jesus Christ and how God changed Mary and Joseph's plans for the good of all mankind. We look at examples positive and negative that have happened in our lives and the lives of others that God uses to change our plans to work for His glory and honor. We learn that God doesn't ask nor need our permission to change our plans. We also learn that serving the Lord is not easy no matter what these TV prosperity gospel preachers say to sell their books. Finally we learn how, God does bless those that obey His will and that all things work to the good for those called according to His purpose.

True Identity
Christmas can be a distracting time. It’s a time when consumerism demands our attention and presents seem to often take precedence over peace. During this time when many celebrate the birth of Jesus we often find our lives in an uproar. Yet this was the opposite of why God sent his Son. Jesus came to bring us what the Hebrews called shalom (peace). His desire was to begin this peace in us and then to see us pass it on.

What I Do
Who are you? Often the answer to that question can be found in any number of different answers. Sometimes those answers are defined by our jobs. Sometimes they are defined by our families. Perhaps who we are is even defined by our past. Yet, so many of those things are more about our reputation and less about our true identity. As we consider what God has to say about who we are it is our response to Jesus that takes us on a journey from reputation to finding our true identity.

Meet Mary, the Mother of Jesus
Time and again, we all encounter true seekers. These are people who have some serious questions about God, Jesus, or Christianity, and they are seeking some factual answers. I believe with all my heart that Christians need not to be timid in inviting these kinds of people to consider some of the evidences that God himself has provided in order to bring enlightenment to them.

Faith in the Darkness
The darkness that surrounded the cross of Jesus was a darkness behind which God hid his face, causing Jesus to cry out with feelings of abandonment. But the actions of two Marys and a man named Joseph remind us that we must press on with faith in the midst of the darkness.

The Covenant Meal Inaugurated (Mark 14:1-31)
The nation of Israel failed to see that the greatest problem they had was not external, such as Rome, but was internal -- their own sin. As a result, they failed to see what sort of a Savior and Messiah they needed. In this passage, we see a sharp contrast between Mary's loving and worshipful anointing of Jesus against the hatred and betrayal of Jesus's many enemies. But at the same time, we are reminded that all -- both true and false disciples -- have need of a savior. We see God's provision for us in Jesus's death, and are regularly reminded of it in our celebration of the Lord's supper.

Wasteful Worship
Guest speaker Daniel Gillespie preaches a hard-hitting message on John 12:1-11. This passage elevates, not Mary as an example of worship, but Jesus as the One worthy of extravagant worship. While some view sacrificial worship of Christ a waste, the true believer recognizes the value of Christ and responds with whole-hearted worship.

His Name Shall Be Called Jesus (Luke 1:26-38)
We consider the miracle and mystery of God become flesh, the birth of the very Son of God in an insignificant town through a series of amazing miracles. Jesus is the son of David whose rule will be forever. All things are under his rule and authority -- we must live under his rule and authority here and now.

Luke 1:1-56 - Faith Like Mary
The Book of Luke starts out with an account of how God sent an angel to announce the coming of the promised Messiah. He came to a small rural town and told a young engaged virgin named Mary that she would become pregnant and give birth to the Messiah. This was no less difficult to believe then as it is now, but Mary trusted that what God had promised would happen and that He would lead her through the difficult pregnancy she would go through. She is an example for us to learn from as we read about God’s promises in the Bible that Jesus can save us from our sins if we put our trust in Him.

Overflowing Joy
Having accepted the call of God on her life in bearing God's son Jesus, Mary hurries to her cousin Elizabeth's house--a difficult 80-mile journey, perhaps a journey made alone. In her determination, she wrestles with the idea of society's opinion of her as an unwed mother, even though she knows the truth of the conception. Upon her arrival at Elizabeth's house, joy overflows between these two women and Mary finds refuge there for three months. Can we experience this overflowing joy in our lives today? After a time of deep struggling and questioning, God often brings an exuberant, transforming joy to us that boils over to those we encounter.

The Comfort of Christmas, Part 2 -- The Comfort of Obedience
On this third Sunday of Advent, we look at the surprising way in which the lives of Joseph and Mary foreshadowed the way in which their Son - Jesus - would fulfill His divine mission. Both the parents and the Son, when faced with monumental tests and trials, responded righteously in obedience. Through the obedience of the parents, the Savior was born. Through the obedience of the Savior, the world will be saved.

The Miracle That Changed Our World
Mary's chaste character is highlighted by the description of her as a virgin. In this account by Luke, he clearly attributes Jesus' conception to the Holy Spirit. The virgin birth of Jesus is unique and superior from the birth of any other person that has ever lived, truly a miracle of God. I hope that as you leave the service today you will be encouraged to believe God for the impossible in your life. ~ Pastor Mel

mary is confronted by gabriel and told her womb will become a "holy of holies" for the messiah. what becomes evident is the place of tension she finds herself in. she is given an incredible privilege to be the mother of jesus but also an incredible detriment. this tension is where we find ourselves when called to follow jesus. the question becomes will we respond like mary or like countless others?

Advent 2, Luke 1, Magnificat
In Jesus, God demonstrates His holiness, His righteousness, yes, that’s what the cross is about… but most of all, this whole thing happened all those years ago so that God could show you His mercy. So that even if He judges all the wrong in the world, no one who doesn’t want to face that judgment need do so. God has kept His word. God has given us a Savior.
