Sermons About Matthew
A Call to Discipleship (Matthew 4:18-22)
In the midst of this present darkness, Jesus Christ came as the “Light of the world” to reveal truth to a sin entranced, sin darkened, sin enslaved humanity. His mission was to reveal God and rescue sinners from His own wrath. He came with a message of hope, a message of judgement, and a message of repentance. And it is a message that He would entrust to His people. A people He would call out for Himself. A people who would follow Him and be His heralds; to be His lights in the world. But it is being light in a dark world, that means it is not an easy call, though it is an extraordinary one. It is a call that comes with a price, but following the example of One who has gone before and paid that price. It is a call count the things eternal more precious the passing treasures of this world. That is to say ... The call to discipleship is a call to forsake all to follow Christ. In our passage this morning, Matthew 4:18-22, I want you to notice: 3 Aspects of the Call to Discipleship. (1) Call to Common People (2) Call to an Extraordinary Task (3) Call that comes with a cost.

Forgive Us as We Forgive Others
One of the greatest gifts that God has given to us is the gift of forgiveness. In forgiveness, God releases us from the debt that our sinful actions created. God no longer insists that we pay for our sin. He has instead charged our sins to another—to his son Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sin. Forgiveness is an important part of prayer. Through the forgiveness of God, the barriers of sin and self-will that caused us to sin are removed, and we are given freedom and a restored relationship. In addition, by forgiving us, God is teaching us how to live with others who have hurt us. He teaches us to forgive them just like he has forgiven us. Today, in learning to pray from Jesus, we talk about the need for forgiveness and the role that it has in our prayers. Jesus has some strong words about forgiveness. They are as encouraging as they are unsettling. Listen today to learn about praying for forgiveness from God.

Fill Up the Banquet Hall
This story is wide and deep. It tells us about the wonderful invitation that the king is giving to come into the banquet hall. It tells about those who received invitations early on, how busy they were, and how many of them ended up declining the offer.

Matthew 7:13-23 The Narrow and Wide Gates 13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. A Tree and Its Fruit 15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. 21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
