The religious temperature of our culture as described by Christian Smith and his team of researchers from UNC is, Moralistic Therapeutic Deism consisting of beliefs like these: 1. "A god exists who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth." 2. "God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions." 3. "The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself." 4. "God does not need to be particularly involved in one's life except when God is needed to resolve a problem." 5. "Good people go to heaven when they die." Colossians and the rest of Scripture totally invalidate these and other misconceptions about who God is and how he relates to us! In Colossians 2:11-17 Paul offers us three proofs that Jesus > Moralism.

An Illustration: Hagar and Sarah
Paul resumes his argument from the Old Testament to show that the Galatians are being wrongly enslaved by the false teachers. He points out that Abraham had more than one son, but only one was the heir, according to the promise. Hagar and Sarah represent the Old and New Covenants, Law and Gospel, slavery and free sons.
