Sermons About Nehemiah
The Nehemiah Model
Nehemiah provides us with a model of how to face extremely difficult circumstances...without turning away from God.

Participation and Progress
God has always intended that His people would so love Him, so trust Him, and so respond to His grace that they would show Him off to each other and this world. They’re to be a display people, a people that tell the world what He’s like by living in such a way that provokes questions and curiosity about the God they love and are loved by. This is what the book of Nehemiah is about. This is the real mission of Nehemiah. This is the real work of God. He wants to revive and restore what has been destroyed by doubt, fear, hopelessness, apathy, and injustice so that the world would know He’s a God who rebuilds what Adam and Eve and you and I have torn down.

Missing the Glory of God in Our Midst
In Nehemiah, the nobles of Jerusalem chose to cling to the comfort and safety of their political alliances and missed the glory of God which stood so clearly in their midst. They feared the glory of God because they knew that to see it would cause them to fall greatly in their own esteem. However, by missing out on the glory of God, the nobles foolishly traded their own eternal joy for what seemed to be an economically wise relationship at the time. Today, we too have the opportunity to see the glory of God and experience the amazing joy that comes as we fall in our own esteem and yet realize that the God of the universe is for us. He is our advocate, our savior, our refuge, our creator, and our friend; and beholding his glory can fill our lives with joy, truth, meaning, and purpose. We must be vigilant not to make the same mistake as the nobles of Jerusalem and trade his glory for lesser things.

Triumph and Treachery
How do we deal with others who deceive us, mistreat us, threaten us, and misunderstand us? By saying today, Father forgive them, they don’t understand what they’re doing. Help me to love them as you have loved me. Help me to not cling to my life and need their approval. Help me to love and fear only you. Thank you for freeing me from the need to control my life and to need approval from others. Let me live out of that truth as you restore me so that others can see how good you are.

Remember Me
What mix of character traits we’ve seen so far in Nehemiah; humility, compassion, a love for God’s glory, the ability to inspire others, a great strategist, a man who prays intensely and waits up on the Lord, yet is a man of action, he’s hard-working, committed to God’s mission, a risk-taker, someone who pursues justice for the poor, hospitable, and generous in ways that make us take notice. But what Nehemiah wants most is not for people to remember or applaud him. Instead, he comes to God in prayer and asks God to remember him.

Greed and Grace
So much time is spent discussing our guilt for doing the things we knew we weren’t supposed to do. But little time is spent with our hearts broken over what He’s called us to do and be for Him. We’ve failed to do what God does and love what God loves. This has caused a great debt that has to be satisfied. If God owns everything, then you’re indebted to Him and Him alone.

Building and Battling
Though the community may provide personal blessings and more, the Christian community is intended to reflect a new way of being human to this world. We are to be an alternate city within San Diego, where we are demonstrating what a truly human society looks like. We are more than a support group for individuals; rather we as individuals are to gather together into a community and put on display what a society looks like when it is transformed by the Gospel. Simply, we are a counter-culture.

Rebuilding God's People
The Bible. God's Word to us. His love letter to humanity. Sadly, we often take it for granted, especially in Western society, where it has always been available to us. Listen as Pastor Tim dissects how the Israelites wept over God's word, and why we should be similarly moved.

The Suffering of The Mission and The Call To Perseverance
This message is a call for all of us to give our lives to loving God with all our hearts and proclaim his beauty to our neighbors. It is a call that when heeded leads inevitably to weariness, discouragement and suffering. In the midst of our inevitable suffering comes the subtle temptation of Satan to return to a more comfortable life. This message is a call to fight that temptation with a vision of the glory of God that is more beautiful than the empty comforts of this world. It is a call to set our eyes upon our savior who gave up the comforts of heaven and earth to be rejected, suffer, and die for us. As we do this we will find that suffering on mission is far more satisfying then the comforts of this world.
