Feasting on Feasts for Three Weeks # 2 - A Gift of Praise to God
God is faithful to provide for His covenant people. God is the owner of all and giver of all good gifts to His people. This one day feast, the Feast of First Fruits, acknowledges God's faithfulness, His ownership of all and His tangible blessings to His people. Therefore, we, like the Israelites, should offer God a gift of praise.
What does your image determines?
I don’t believe that the primary point of this passage is about church and state relations. When we consider the context, this is really about Jesus’ continued conflict with the national Jewish leaders. This is an extension of the conflict over what sort of tenants we are living like. Jesus was telling these religious leaders that they were trying to live like they were land lords. They were living like they were the Boss. Within that context, Jesus is coming back to this same point – who is in charge – are you paying what you owe. The denarius was Caesar’s because it bore the image of Caesar. So, what bears the image of God? We do; we bear the likeness of God. Follow Jesus logic: Coins have the image of a ruler, and they may be returned to him. Human beings are made in the image of God; they and all they have belong to him. We are confronted with two worlds. The world of Caesar and the world of God; we cannot pursue both worlds. Jesus is calling us to revolt against our own sinful selfish desires for this world and turn to him. We cannot give God what he requires until we fully give him what is his. When we break our allegiance to this world that is when we can fully hope in the coming world. That is when we will really long for Jesus to return because we desire him more than all this other stuff that is as worthless as that idolatrous denarius.
