An apostle as a person
Pastor Geoff Findlay preaches the 27th sermon in our series from Romans. All the deep and meaningful stuff has been dealt with. What are we left with at the end of Romans - a mere travelogue? If we take such an attitude we would be doing ourselves a grave disservice, for here Paul opens up his pastor's heart and reveals what makes him tick as a person.

Walking Worthy . . . For Others (Ephesians 4:1 - 5:2)
We are to walk worthy of the calling that brought us from death and wrath to being a forgiven child of God. Overwhelmingly, Paul describes this manner of walking in terms of our relationships: we are to walk in unity, play our part in the body of Christ, and put on the new man -- which is itself described in terms of bringing grace and encouragement and grace to one another.

An Appeal to Unity Through Humility
We do not create unity in the context of the local church but we are called to make every effort to keep that unity given by God. Paul's appeal is not that we all think exactly the same thoughts and carry the same opinions but that we have one mindset in the essentials of our faith. How can we guard this unity and live it out? By following Christ's glorious example of humility that considers others as more significant than ourselves.

Acts 28:1-31 - The End of Jerusalem
The book of Acts concludes with Paul surviving the shipwreck on Malta and then being brought to Rome to stand trial before Caesar. Paul would eventually be acquitted and released from prison, but a few years later an intense period of persecution began and both Paul and Peter were executed by Emperor Nero. A few years later the Roman army would lay siege to Jerusalem and destroy the temple. Even with the temple in ruins and most of the prominent leaders murdered the Christian church not only survived but continued to grow and in the next few hundred years the Gospel would move throughout the Roman Empire, and then would move on to the rest of the world. The church continued to grow because all of these obstacles were no match for the Holy Spirit, who continued to work in the lives of people to help them to put their faith in Christ. The same Spirit continues to work today on the mission of bringing the Gospel to this community and we are invited and commanded to participate.

Acts 27:1-44 - In the Storm
Paul was taken on a voyage from Caesarea to Rome in order to stand trial before the Emperor. The ship took too long to get to Rome and ended up getting caught in a vicious winter storm in the Mediterranean. The passengers began to despair because these storms almost always destroyed the ship and killed everyone aboard, but God told Paul that everyone on board would survive and that he would stand trial before the Emperor. Paul trusted in this promise from God and encouraged the other passengers. The ship ended up breaking apart on a shoal but everyone aboard made it to shore safely. In our live we are all going to have to weather periods of adversity, suffering, and trial, but in those times we should not wilt and give up hope but instead to stand firm and cling to the promises of God that He is there with us in the midst of our trials and He has promised to work all of our difficult circumstances out for the good of those who love Him.
