Are You Ready? -Overview of Malachi-
Overview of Malachi Malachi 1:1 God’s last Old Testament message to His earthly people Israel is directed to the remnant that returned from the Babylonian captivity. This remnant had totally failed during the decades after the return in their testimony for God. It is true that the Jews did no longer serve the idols as they did before the exile, but their moral condition was marked by indifference, despising of God and unbelief. Into this situation God declares His unchanging love for the people and points out their sins and their departure from His commandments (Mal. 1 – 2). But God also announces to the Jews that severe judgments will come upon them before he sends his next prophet to usher in the coming of Jesus Christ. (Mal. 3 – 4). Over the next couple months we will examine this ancient message and learn principles and commands that remain true today. The book of Malachi is truly an “Ancient Truth for Modern Timesâ€

Disciples and Priests
Similar to Paul’s analogy of the church being a body with many members and Christ being the head, Peter describes the church as a spiritual house made of living stones with Christ as the foundation-cornerstone. More specifically, he refers to believers as a holy and royal priesthood. Christ’s death on the cross eliminates the distinction between priests and laypersons. This teaching, often referred to as the priesthood of all believers, does away with the dichotomy of clergy and laity. Ministry is shared among many members—not monopolized by a few paid professionals. A believer is a follower or a disciple who is now welcomed into priesthood!

He mediates our new and better covenant, and so faithfully forgives and cleanses us of our sins.

The Covenant Meal Inaugurated (Mark 14:1-31)
The nation of Israel failed to see that the greatest problem they had was not external, such as Rome, but was internal -- their own sin. As a result, they failed to see what sort of a Savior and Messiah they needed. In this passage, we see a sharp contrast between Mary's loving and worshipful anointing of Jesus against the hatred and betrayal of Jesus's many enemies. But at the same time, we are reminded that all -- both true and false disciples -- have need of a savior. We see God's provision for us in Jesus's death, and are regularly reminded of it in our celebration of the Lord's supper.

The Book of the Covenant (Exodus 20:18 - 23:33)
The law that God gave to Israel, and the way that Moses, the Levites, and the angel of the Lord served as mediator between Israel and God, all point to Jesus and his perfect sacrifice and mediation between us and God.
