The Mission and Call of God For His People: Jonah 2
Last week we looked at the paradox of Jonah in his disobedience and deserving of judgment being a sign of Christ’s judgment on the cross on our behalf. In our passage today, we see a similar admittance of guilt, and a repentant return to the Lord. What’s interesting is that in spite of Jonah’s disobedience in Chapter one, the pagan sailors seem to have recognized this reality too. Another perspective is the acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty in our adverse circumstances even when we are running away God appears absent but even in Jonah’s predicament He is not only present, but actively present.

A Profile in Courage
Paul displays courage in going to Jerusalem despite the advice of his friends and the knowledge that he would suffer and be imprisoned. If we want to have the same type of courage we must know our calling and love Jesus more than life.

Life is Good
Before Jesus went to the cross He promised His disciples that they would suffer persecution. As He was confirming the promises of the Gospel to them on the eve of His crucifixion this was among them. As Americans we are truly blessed in the sense that our founding fathers came from a culture of persecution and protected us from a lot of that kind of thinking as they framed our country's governing documents. I some sense though having been protected from it we have become soft and impure. Looking through the history of the Church, this and other promised that Jesus made to his disciples and through them to the Church, we should recognize how good we have it as we see Jesus' words fulfilled all around us.
