Roadmap For Repentance
A turning point in King David's life came when he committed the sin of adultery with Bathsheba and the sin of murder against her husband, Uriah. Even though David was a man after God's own heart, his sins were ultimately committed against God. This is true of all sin in a depraved world. The tragedy of this phase of David's life is that he tried to cover his sin, and as a consequence, his life thereafter was anything but joyful. How common this is for unrepentant sinners. But, David shows us that only those who feel the weight of their sin feel the need to cry out to God! In Psalm 51, the spirit of God, through the example of David, illustrates the four steps that every sinner must take to get back into a right relationship with God. These steps require that we 1) cry for mercy, 2) confess our sin, 3) call for forgiveness, and 4) commit to obey. Moreover, Psalm 51 is the classic illustration of repentance in the Old Testament. It is a 'sinner's guide' on how to get back to a right relationship with God. It should be our model - one that we should turn to at all times as our lifetime roadmap. It is only the greatness of God's compassion that allows us the confidence and boldness to approach Him for forgiveness. And, we should always remember that God's grace will always be greater than our greatest sin. So, we should not refuse to confess nor hesitate to ask for forgiveness so that we can continue to enjoy all the blessings of God's forgiveness. Genuine repentance is marked by true brokeness which leads to complete obedience.
