Scripture: Nehemiah 8:1-10; Luke 4:14-21 The Kingdom of God is bigger than us. Sometimes the Word of God stretches us. How passionate are we in searching for and doing God’s things? How do we convey the good news to the poor: financially and spiritually?

Message #7 from our "Back To School" series highlighting the Mormon Faith, holding it up to the light of truth from God's Word.
The Role of the Church in the World
In the Christian life, that the writer of Hebrews likens to a race, endurance is necessary. In 12:1 we are told to get rid of the obstacles that weigh us down and the sin that so easily entangles us. In v. 2 we are told that we do this by "fixing our eyes on Jesus" because he is the pioneer and perfecter of the faith that we have as Christians. To fix our eyes on Jesus is to do two things simultaneously: 1) reject the world's sinful pleasures and 2) reach for the heavenly reward. We both see that this is the case and what it means for us as we pay attention to what the writer of Hebrews had written prior to chapter 12 that leads to him drawing this conclusion. It will mean repudiating the world's pattern of thought and way of life and recognizing that we are, even now, organically united to the future and what God is bringing about and will bring to its fulfillment in through the Lord Jesus.
