Live Your Faith
An honest person will admit that every religion or set of beliefs has its hypocrites. The interesting thing is the Bible itself, the heart of Christian teaching, has always acknowledged the problem of hypocrisy and inconsistency in the church. But the answer, according to the Bible, is not less Christianity but deeper Christianity, authentic Christianity. When Martin Luther King Jr. confronted the hypocrisy of racism in the church he didn't call for less Christianity but a more authentic, truer, deeper Christianity. That's the same thing we see in the book of James. This passage has something to say to all of us about what it means to have a faith that is real and alive.

Bearing the Marks
In our postmodern world authenticity is becoming increasingly important. Today's generation has largely rejected the idea of absolute truth, but they are still interested what is real. Do you feel that your life is an authentic or real representation of a Christ-follower? Are you the real deal? What makes us real? Is it Belief? Behavior? Or is it Becoming like Jesus? Is it our character? In the book of Galatians, Paul told the Christians in Galatia that the only way to live out authentic Christianity was to walk in the Spirit and so bear the fruit of the Spirit in their lives. Paul taught that following Christ was more than an outward keeping of the law. Christians are to show forth the character of God. We can allow the Lord to give us these nine marks of authentic Christian character, so that we are like Christ, not just in what we believe, or in what we practice, but in our very nature.

Expect Good Things from God
You could boil this passage down with this statement: bank your prayer life on God’s love for you. It seems that Jesus wants to encourage his disciples to keep praying, but he is not just calling them to be persistent; the call is different. Perseverance in prayer is certainly a part of the equation but it is not the end-game here. Jesus’ goal is to call his disciples to pray from a robust understanding of God’s love for them. The critical phrase for this passage is found in verse 11: “how much more.” Jesus wants for his followers to pray with the “how-much-moreness” of God in mind. He aims to motivate pray by God-centered encouragement.

Genuine Faith Proven through Works
Works are considered a four letter word in most evangelical circles because Christians are saved by faith in Jesus Christ. Although this is true, James very clearly states that works are necessary in the life of a Christian. Put simply, faith is necessary for salvation and works are necessary as a true follower of Jesus Christ. WHY? Because this is how we show our faith is genuine--to prove our faith in Jesus Christ is real.
