Made for Mission
God intended for Adam and Eve to fill the earth with His glory. He took Adam from soil outside the Garden, created him (in His image) within the Garden, but expected the borders of the Garden to expand for a multiplying population. Even after Adam and Even sinned and were ejected from the Garden of Eden, God still requires them to fill, rule, subdue, and multiply. These verbs continue to mark the Biblical story (Gen. 9:1; 12:1-3; Ex. 1:7) of God's desire for relationship and redemption told through Israel, Jesus, and the NT church. The word for this is Mission. Whereas the impulse is for the church to be internal, hoping converts will brave the doors of their worship service, the missionary calling of the NT is for the church to live external (centrifugal), spreading truth and embodying reconciliation throughout the world (2 Cor. 5-6).
