Rejoicing in Rescue
Luke 15:1-10 With the memory of the Grand Banquet (14:15-24) fresh in the reader's mind, the question arises: Why would a wealthy host want to let his house be filled with the poor, blind, crippled, and lame? And even more, why would he invite total strangers – foreigners! – to his banquet? Jesus gives the answer: Because His goodness and greatness are most clearly displayed in the rescue of those who are helpless to save themselves, and are unworthy in themselves to merit rescue.

John 1:1-14 - Deliverance
People are often eager to be rescued from their frustrating circumstances. The first-century Jews were longing for someone to rise up and deliver the land from Roman occupation. Today we hope to be saved from material, financial, and social discomforts. Whatever our desires, we are all in need of a different sort of deliverance: spiritual deliverance. John kicks off his Gospel by introducing us to Jesus Christ, the eternal God come down to earth as a human being on a rescue mission to save us from our sins and reconcile us to the Father.
