Resolutions for Renewal
The new year is always a time for us to pause to reflect on life, reconsider priorities and resolve to change. Though most of us have quite a history of failed resolutions, the apostle Paul, in Romans 12:1-2, appeals to us not to give up resolving. In fact, the only reasonable response to the gospel is to resolve and re-solve to offer our lives and routines to God as worship. Listen to find out the 3 essential steps for any spiritual resolution and to hear about a gospel-shaped plan that can keep us rooted and growing in grace.
Rx for Spiritual Care of the Heart
In the year we make many resolutions to "improve" ourselves for the coming year. Many of these resolutions and changes we make to "improve" ourselves don't address what scripture considers the key issue of our lives, our heart. Jude gives 5 Rx for heart care. These care instructions come in the face of conflict with false teachers.
RESOLVE
Many people make New Years resolutions that don't last or make any difference, today we learn 3 resolutions from the word of God that will change our lives.
Resolutions (Philippians 3:7-16)
People make resolutions at New Years every year. Is there a difference between a Christian and a nonchristian resolution? Should there be a difference? The gospel, in fact, changes our reason for and purpose in resolutions leading to life, joy, hope and thankfulness.
Planning Ahead
As we head into a new year, it is common to make plans or set goals. What do you take into account as you plan ahead? James rebukes those who make plans presumptively. Presumptive planning is sinful, since it revolves around self and excludes God. Presumptive planning is also foolish, since it neglects our ignorance of what lies ahead as well as the brevity and frailty of life. So, as you look ahead to another year, humbly plan to live in God's will. Respect His will. Remember our common destiny. Realize the life God has given you. Stop putting off God's will in your life. If you can do it now, then do it now! [Note: The closings applications in this message were inspired by a message from Chuck Swindoll on this same passage.]
