Sermons About Rest
Jesus Brings Real Joy and Rest
In chapter 5, Jesus declares Himself to be the Bridegroom after the Pharisees asked him why His disciples don't fast. People aren't sad at weddings but are joyous! Jesus brings real joy because He is the Bridegroom. We can only find real joy in Him. He told the Pharisees a parable about old and new things (v. 36-39). Jesus is the new, and some people (the Pharisees, teachers of the law, etc.) prefer the old - the old covenant and the additions to the covenant. In chapter 6, Jesus lives this new wine principle out. He proclaims that He is the Lord of the Sabbath. Only Jesus brings real rest, and we must find our rest in Him alone.

Restlessness and Rest
How do we experience true rest in a culture that is always busy. We are always doing something, the TV is always on, the schedule is always full. And we are tired. Jesus offers us rest if we will do a "yoke exchange" - will you take him up on his offer?

The Easy Life
Much is communicated about the difficulty of living the Christian life, but our Lord indicates that this is not necessarily so. Our text describes a life that is substantially less burdensome and invites us to come unto Him and experience it for ourselves.

The Church in Smyrna: Revelation 2:8
The church in Smyrna was made up of poor people who had endured many hardships. Jesus, the First and the Last, who defeated death, knows their tribulation, poverty, and the slander from the Jews that they have endured. Jesus tells them that he hears them, and yet they continue suffering. Not only does he call the church to not be afraid, he calls them to be faithful by treasuring him above all else, even to the point of death. He promises that the sufferings we experience right now, no matter how heavy they are, will one day seem light and momentary compared to the glory that he holds in store for his people. He suffered to end our suffering. He suffered so that no matter how much we have suffered at death, it is over. We will have an eternity with him.

Fourth Commandment: Work and Rest Rhythm
Maybe as much as any of the 10, this command to enjoy God in work-rest rhythm shows where things might be broken inside even while we have the right answers to all sorts of Bible related questions.

When You're Slammed
We often need practical help with our tendency to over commit. We have to be reminded to slow down and enjoy the most important things in life. But it's important to know what the Bible says about rest also. Jesus talks about a deeper rest in Matthew 11:28-29 when he said: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls.” This idea of rest for our souls is what is often missing from a lot of popular advice for dealing with the stresses of life.
