Jesus went to a celebration to tell the people that He was the Messiah and the fulfillment of their celebration. The authorities tried to arrest Jesus because they were too stubborn to believe in Him as they were hung up on their man-made rules and were unwilling to admit to their own sinfulness and need for forgiveness.

John 3:1-16 - The Search for Truth
Many people set out in their life on a search for the truth but most get bogged down along the way by their preconceptions and refusal to admit to their sins and change. Nicodemus comes to Jesus in search of the truth and Jesus confronts his preconceptions and teaches him that he must be 'born again' by the Spirit of God so that he can see his sins, repent, and accept Christ's forgiveness and righteousness.
