Sermons About Righteousness
Blessed Persecution, Pt. 1 (Matthew 5:10-12)
Throughout the beatitudes, the Lord has been laboring to make clear what it means to truly be a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven. He has, in a few verses, managed to turn the religious thinking of His day upside down. Now as we come to the end of our study of the beatitudes we are confronted with one of the most shocking statements the Lord ever uttered. The Lord gives His most extensive treatment to this last beatitude. First, let me just note the structure of these verses. In v. 10 the Lord ends the inclusio which began in v. 3, now returning to the present tense, “Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” As opposed the previous 6 verses, “shall be,” which looks forward to the ultimate and final fulfillment at the end of the age; in heaven. Verses 11-12 expand on His statement in v.10. To understand what the Lord is teaching us here we are going to break it down into 5 truths about persecution that will encourage us to live more boldly & more decisively for Christ. They are: (1) REALITY, (2) REASON, (3) RESULT, (4) RESPONSE, and (5) REWARD of persecution. We are going to look at the first 3 this morning.

Jesus is Not Your Homeboy (Exodus 3)
If faith in the gospel transforms us......why don't we obey Jesus?? 1.) We need to know who we are dealing with! Jesus is God and our God is a consuming fire! 2.) We need to know who we are! We are all sinners saved by grace and it is by that grace that we are consumed in the fire! 3.) Take your doggone shoes off! Draw near to God and be afraid! 4.) Let know who have ears......listen!

You Can Break New Ground (2)
As you can see in this verse, the prophet Hosea uses the analogy of sowing and reaping. He is saying that, if the Israelites want to reap God's blessings for themselves, they must plant the right kind of seeds in their lives--godly seeds. Using the ideas of farming found in our Bible text, let's consider three actions we can take to reap a bountiful harvest of good things from God.

God's Covering is Better than Fig Leaves
Thoughout Scripture, we see God providing a covering for his people through the sacrificing of animals. Eventually, he would send his only son to become our covering, our righteousness. Yet, so many of us still try to do what Adam and Eve did when they sinned, they try to come up with their own means of covering, but fig leaves won't cut it.
