What About the Giant Within Us?
David’s sin with Bathsheba is hard to understand. How could this man who sought God so often fall to sin under these circumstances? Well, that story is played out over and over again in people’s lives today. You see, perhaps the biggest giant of all is the one inside of us. Jesus said, “For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders, adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, lewdness, stinginess, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.” (Matthew 7:21-22)
Lasting Change Begins in the Heart
If we ever hope to experience lasting change in our lives, then we must deal with our problems on the heart level. The heart of our problem is the problem in our heart. Jesus made it very plain that we do the things we do because of what we have stored up in our hearts. People and circumstances are not the cause of our problems, they only provide occasions for our hearts to reveal themselves. Fruit change is a result of root change. The heart must be the target of our personal growth and ministry. God wants to produce a heart change in us and then use us to produce heart change in others.
All You Need is Need
Most of the stories have been beautiful pictures of His pursuing grace towards those who are broken down and hopeless. Jesus has shown an incredible capacity for love towards the unclean and marginalized. He breaks all the stupid-man rules by going right to the center of lost and welcoming them in.
