The book of Revelation gives a clear picture of God's ultimate justice and Jesus' victory over evil. John blends epistle, prophecy, and apocalyptic literature for a whirlwind depiction of Jesus' reign, return, and consummation of the world. While Revelation can does offer insight into the future, its greater import is providing encouragement to present church. The book likewise provides the greatest hymn (Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lamb) and prayer (Come, Lord Jesus, come) God's beloved will ever know. Thus, until the return of Jesus, God's beloved are to worship him while waiting.

Not everyone who leaves the church departs on good terms. Some leave for selfish reasons; others are driven by philosophical differences. Excuses abound. Regardless, it is typically difficult to watch the church family fracture and shrink. The apostle John's church experienced an exodus. The dissenters were spreading doubt about Jesus' life in the flesh (and consequently the reality of the crucifixion and forgiveness of sins). John writes his church to assure them that these folks who spread antichrist sentiments should not be pursued. Their departure is better, for they follow the lusts of the world and the lies of the devil. For those who have remained, he writes to provide certainty of Jesus' incarnation, forgiveness of sins, and the mark of true Christianity: love. The family of God should be confident--they are children of God redeemed by Jesus--and affectionate--they love because they are loved by God.
