Saving for a Rainy Day
How many of you aspire to retire with no savings and nothing to live off of except Social Insecurity if it’s even around by then? It is ironic that in one of the most affluent countries in the world we’ve got people that retire broke all the time living off of a small S.S. check. Most companies no longer have the set-up where you work there for so long and then collect a pension after you retire. Statistics say that very few American households have even $1,000 saved in a bank account. When an emergency happens we remember the motto, “Life takes VISA”. We spend as if there is no tomorrow and while that may sound fun and be fun it’s stupid! I’ve got an expert authority on this that agrees: Proverbs 21:20- “The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.”

You Are My Family Redeemer
We live in a world of brokenness. There is no place where this is more evident than in the life of families. The signs of this brokenness and dysfunction are all around us. It is particularly evident as we look at the younger generation and their longing for community, for mentors and for authenticity. What is the hope for families? The answer is found in the Bible. The Bible is the story of God’s re-encounter with a broken world through Jesus Christ. One of the ministries of Christ is that he puts broken things back together. Today in the Word, we will read a section from the book of Ruth. It is a story about a kinsman or family redeemer. This picture however is evocative of the saving power of Christ. On Mother’s Day, we not only wish God’s blessings on all the moms here today, but we point you to the one who puts broken things back together. We encourage you to prayerfully read through all the Bible passages listed above to get the big picture.
